Re: green screen on hd tv

Hello,

I have found a MS Knowledge Base article that discusses this exact problem.
In fact there is a hot fix for this exact problem on this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943195

I have checked multiple times what my system specs are and made my request
for the hot fix. In fact I have made this request twice since the first time
I thought that I had incorrectly specified my system specs. The reason is,
when I attempted to apply the hotfix, the hotfix gave me an alert that said,
"the update does not apply to your system."

I didn't understand. The knowledge base article clearly stated that this
problem applies to Windows Vista Ultimate and I am having this exact problem.
I thought I may have specified my system specs incorrectly so I requested
the hot fix again. Same result: "the update does not apply to your system."
At this point I sent a support request.

The response I received from the customer service representative was simply
reiterating my problem and after it, a canned response saying that I can pay
for technical support or I do my own self-help research using the knowledge
base.

Has anyone else had this same problem where they try to apply this specific
hot fix and received this "the update does not apply to your system" error?

Thank you,

Kevin

OK Jw,

I have a fix......bit of a hammer solution.
I dropped in a new Sapphire ATI HD2600XT with 256meg GDDR3 and Unified video
decoder and 5.1 audio on board.

I now have no green screen issues and beautiful DVD playback.
Thanks for all your help...may have been an issue with the inability of the
onboard video chipset???

What decoders are listed in the Audio drop down box and which one is
selected?
Many users have had problems with Nero 7 since it apparently changes a dll
common to all decoders.
I don't know how to fix the problem since apparently uninstalling Nero 7
does not fix the problem. if you don't have a restore point prior to
installing Nero 7 that you can and want to use.
If there is no information on the Nero website maybe an OS repair will fix
it.

JW,

Sorry mate I didnt explain myself properly.
I am using VMCD.
The problem is when I click the drop down for the video decoder ( the top
drop down list box) it lists the audio decoder as well as the video
decoder
for WinDVD there instead of in separate list boxes.
Am I able to screen dump on this forum?

The MS XP decoder check utility does not work in Vista even though it
appears to because the registry location in Vista is different from the
registry location in XP for storing the MC preferred decoder.
You have to use the following 3rd party utility in Vista.

JW sorry its taken so long to get onto it.
I tried installing a version of WinDVD that I have.
When I use DECCHECK I can set the preferred video CODEC to be WinDVD I
then
launch VMCD to set it for Media Center but when I click the dropdown
for
the
video codec the WinDVD audio Codec is listed as well.....So I am unable
to
set Video and Audio to be WinDVD.

However I do have a copy of NREO 7 which installs a CODEC as well and I
set
it to be audio and video using VMCD but unfortunately Media Center and
Media
player did not like the codec and liosted as no codec installed or
codec
error and I got no playback whatsoever. I have read other posts on the
web
which seem to indicate that this is a problem with the TV card I am
using.

I tried uninstalling the TV card driver and used windows update to try
and
have vista install the MS Unified Video Decodder but had no luck Vista
didnt
find it.

So back to square one really....

Thanks for all you help.

Nope,

Media Player has no trouble with DVD's...using any codec.
Its a strange issue. I have read posts about the green screen issue
and
my
video card and people suggest to change the default decoder. Which
causes
my
DVD playback problem.

Thanks JW.

I read you DVD problem as video and not audio in error. In any case
it
is
suggested that you use the audio decoder that matches the video
decoder.
Do you have trouble playing DVD in Media Center and in Media Player?

JW,

I left it alone and used the default MS audio decoder. Why do you
ask?

If you used the Vista decoder utility from the following link did
you
also
change the audio decoder or did you leave it alone and use the MS

Thanks for the reply.

HDMI from PC to LCD TV and res 720p
I have no problems with DVD in MCE.
If I minimise and then maximise VMC with the HD channel
selected I
can
view
it fine...its just when I first open up VMC and navigate to a
HD
channel I
get the green screen.

Last night I tried to change the default MPEG2 Codec for VMC
using
Deccheck
and VMCD. This fixed the green screen issue but caused problems
with
DVD
playback ( Audio but no video - black screen )

Very dissapointing as I find Vista MCE well thought out and
presented.

Thanks,

What resolution are you outputting at over what interface?
Does it happen with both both 720p and 1080i programs?
Do you have any problem when playing DVDs in MC?

When I try to view HD TV(over the air from antennae) I get a

If
I minimise Vista media center the image comes good.
