I have a computer running WinXP SP2 that has recently refused to
boot
because
I messed around with it. It will not boot windows even in safe
mode
and I
have taken the hard disk out of the computer and connected it as a
drive
in
another computer in an attempt to obtain all the "My Documents"
files
from
it
so that I can reformat and reinstall Windows and start again.

For 3 out of 4 profiles this worked fine but for the profile that
I
use
mainly (which is also an administrator profile) I can not access
the
folders
("Access is Denied" Dialog Box). This is probably because I
remember
clicking
something in the past to make my files private on that computer.

Anyway, I have tried accessing the folder through "Run -> cmd" and
using
the
DOS prompts to try accessing the folder but no luck.

Does anyone out there have an idea what might be wrong and how I
might be
able to get the files out of the private "My Documents" Folder?

p.s. BTW I have also tried right clicking on "My Documents" and
trying to
turn on the Sharing across the network but no luck, it won't let
me.

Thanks for the response, unfortunately none of those worked :(

The first article says that it refers to both winXP home and prof but
it
only works on prof (I submitted feedback about it).

The second article states that it only works on winXP Prof and I have
Home
(which I did forget to mention in my first post).

The third article was for Win2000 and the fourth article was for NFS
whereas
I have NTFS (which I also forgot to mention in the original post).

Thanks very much again, I don't suppose you have any other ideas?

One thought I just had: Both article 1 and 2 are basically suggesting
the
same thing but they need winXP Prof to be workable and I only have Home
installed on both computers (the working one and the corrupted one).

The idea of both article 1 and 2 is to turn off "Simple File Sharing"
so
that when you right click and choose properties on a file or folder a
security tab and a sharing tab appears instead of there being just a
sharing
tab. The security tab allows you to change access permissions.

If I was to plug the hard drive into a computer that was running winXP
Prof
as an OS would it matter that the original drive was configured on
winXP
Home
do you think?

Any comments?

This one is supposed to work in XP Home also

This is the article I was looking for the first time.

That worked, I put XP in safe mode which gave me the security tab and then
I
retrieved all the data that I wanted.

Good work and thank you very much. :D

Very Good! Glad something worked.
