ATI Radeon problems with Acer TFT screen

I am trying to install a new display: Acer X192W - 1440*900 TFT to my
HP pavillion PC with an ATI Radeon x300SE (0x5B60) video card.

Other hardware is recent (P4 processor, 3MHz, 1Mb RAM). My OS is
Windows XP MCE and the system is stable.

The video card's Bios is 113-AA14000-103, its other specs are 128 Mb,
324E, 196M CRT+TV.

When connecting the new monitor, the system recognises features and
model correctly and plug and play works fine at first sight.

The system sets itself to 1440*900 screen resolution by 75 Hz (that is
indeed the native solution and frequency of the Acer screen).

Image quality at these settings is superb, with one major flaw: there
is a black bar at the left hand side of the screen of about an inch
wide. This bar is wider than the monitors display menu can correct.

When I set the screen resolution to 1280*768 I get full and correct
screen coverage, but the image is fuzzy, again beyond what can be
corrected with the monitors menu options (focus, etc.).

Can anyone offer insights?
.
