Re: Windows Media Centre useless without remote?

You are not willing to spend $38.99 for a remote and IR hardware that will
give you the function that you want?

You do not have to put the IR emitter on the set top box, but MCE does
require that you have the IR hardware connected to the USB port. MCE will
not tune the Composite Video input without the IR hardware connected.

Now if you set up MCE's tuner to antenna or cable tv without Set top box,
you can tune the channel 3 or 4 output of the set top box. That does not
require IR hardware.

As to whether you can control the Satellite box from MCE depends on the
actual satellite box.
If it is a box that uses a IR remote and uses 3 or 4 digit channel numbers,
MCE can control the box.

Not correct.

I can spend the same amount of money either way. I can either have
another
device stuck in the computer which will not be able to totally control the
SAT box anyway or buy software that can use a mouse for such a simple task
as
watching TV in a window. I don't need to use expensive software to
accomplish this.

It strikes me as ridiculous that this can't be done with just a couple
mouse
clicks. The IR Blaster should not be a requirement before I can install
MC
to watch TV, it should be optional.

Of course this isn't entirely true. I can watch it in a postage stamp
size
window during the set up process. So close to usable operation as is yet
so
far.

Let me get this straight.. You'll spend big bucks on a software that does
nearly what MC will do, rather than spend a few bucks on a remote.. Am I
right?

Vista Home Premium comes with this software and I have a video card
that
works with it. What I do not have is a remote other than my SAT
receiver
remote. I can't do much with recording and watching TV because the
install
is looking for a remote.

Surely there must be some way to use this program without a remote?
WMC
seems like an easy and cheap way to have a PVR without extra cost, but
if
I
have to buy a remote I might as well just buy a different software
package
that doesn't need a remote such as BeyondTV.

Please tell me I don't have to be stuck without a specialized device.

Thanks.
