You need the IR Emitter cable that connects between the IR receiver for the remote and your set top box. That is how Media Center changes the channel on your set top box to show/record the actual program that you want.
See this article by MVP Barb Bowman on setting up dual tuners for use with set top boxes. Its easily adaptable to one tuner.

If your PC didn't come with an IR Emitter (it should have), you can purchase them from various locations. I get mine from SmartHome.com
http://www.smarthome.com/_/ProductResults.aspx?Ntt=ir%20emitter
Note: The dual emitters won't work for two set top boxes. They both send the same signal from the IR Receiver (beanbag). You can buy cheaper ones, but this is my preffered emitter.

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 1.
Media Center is 2004, Version 5.1.2600.1387. I had been able to record basic
cable TV programs with no problem. I switched to digital cable with a cable
box. I went through the Setup procedure. It is using channel 3 for the
signal. The only problem during setup was “Media Center cannot detect either
the IR control cable or the remote sensor.” I elected to skip that step. The
light in the sensor flashes when I press a button on the remote and the Guide
will change channels. I can view programs ok. I can record digital programs
"on the fly" by hitting the record button. When I try to schedule a
recording, it fails with "<program> was not recorded. There was an unexpected
failure. (Error code: 774)". Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Paul
