Re: DVB-C support in MCE

Hi

Well, exactly what I expected... Thank's!

Now i'm running with Vista Home Premium and Vista TV. Running fine, even
with HDTV support in VMC (running Power DVD 7 as decoder).

We will then hope for any positive news in the future ;-)

Mike

Officially neither Media Center 2005, or Media Center in Vista support DVB-C
or DVB-S or DVB-S2.

However several third parties have got fed up with the complete and utter
failure of Microsoft to support international TV standards and have
developed solutions themselves.

Contrary to the rubbish that Microsoft seem to have been spouting below, it
is not necessary to have DirectX 10 to do DVB-C, or DVB-S. It might be that
if/when Microsoft get off their great fat ass and finally add support for
these they will in their own implementation use and require DirectX 10 to do
this (undoubtedly so they can then choke it to death with DRM).

Here is a shipping, working and reliable solution for DVB-C that not only
works with Media Center 2005, but also with Media Center in Vista. It can
even do pay-tv services as well. It is fully integrated in to Media Center
with EPG etc.

See http://www.digital-everywhere.com/en/alcms/index.php?sid=1190404644
or http://www.digital-everywhere.com/en/alcms/index.php?sid=1190057723

They also have a similarly fully integrated solution for DVB-S see
http://www.digital-everywhere.com/en/alcms/index.php?sid=1190404681 or
http://www.digital-everywhere.com/en/alcms/index.php?sid=1187859689

If you want to do DVB-S2 and MPEG-4 for HDTV then yet again Microsoft have
completely failed to deliver, and yet again a third-party has had to step in
to the breach.

See http://sceneo.buhl.de/Sceneo___Produkt_Seite_VistaTV.BuhlData

Unfortunately, as Media Center (even in Vista) does not support MPEG4 or
H.264 in the TV area _AT ALL_ this third-party software cannot be fully
integrated in to Media Center so it acts as a separate module in the Media
Center menu. (Ironically the XBox360 does support MPEG4 and H.264)

Vista added zero, nadda, diddly squat, zilch, not a sausage in terms of new
Media Center features for Europe. Despite the article and presentation
referred to by Jason Tsang below (way back in 2006), it is going to be at
least the middle of 2008 before we see anything (if we believe Microsoft),
and my original prediction was that it would be more like 2010 before
Microsoft finally got their act together!

Microsoft still don't even offer MSN Remote Record outside the USA! Nor do
they support subtitles on any digital TV service outside the USA (not even
for DVB-T which allegedly, is 'supported' by Microsoft in Media Center), and
analogue TV is ALREADY starting to be turned off in Europe!!

Note: I use Media Center 2005, I have not upgraded to Vista because in terms
of a Media Center in Europe it is NOT an upgrade (at best it could be
considered a sidegrade).

Hi

An old thread coming up... ;-)

I have Vista Home Premium running and a KNC ONE TV-Station DVB-C. No way,
card is not recognized.

What are the news about DVB-C cards and Vista Media Center??

Mike

I did some research for this subject.

The problem seems to be that DirectX 9 (and to be more presice DirectShow)
do support only DVB-T. There are no functions or data types for handling
DVB-C, DVB-S or EPG program guide. DirectX 10's SDK does provide these.

Thus it seems that in order to use DVB-C/S/S2 one needs to be able to use
DirectX 10. And DirectX 10 is available only for Vista and upwards, it
seems
unlikely that MS will ever be providing DVB-C support for Windows Media
Center Edition.

The blog you are referring to is written by Matt Goyer, Microsoft's
Program
Manager for Windows Media Center, eHome Division. Here is his blog:

A: Yes

Q: When are you going to provide more information about Digital Cable
Tuners
(formerly called OCUR)?
A: Soon. I'm sorry that we can't provide a firm date.

Q: DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-C support?
A: I honestly didn't really know much about these standards and so I went
and talked to our expert on them, got educated, and all we can say is that
we
won't be supporting these in Windows Vista but they are standards that we
are
considering supporting in future releases.

Hello

I was wondering if Microsoft has announced any plans of supporting
DVB-C
with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I know that MCE 2005 version
supports
only DVB-T.
