S-video image is created using what is called scan conversion to create the
image and the PQ can vary widely between s-converter chips. The S-scan
converter chip in your freeview box is apparently a more expensive one with
better PQ then the one on your 7300 card. Years ago when scan converter
boxes came on the market some of them cost $3000.
S-video output from PC graphics cards is universally disappointing compared to a Set Top Box or
Games Console that is optimised for connecting to an analogue TV. Using an XBox 360 used as a Media
Center Extender connected via RGB SCART will deliver a considerably improved picture quality
although the only real cure is to replace the TV with an HDTV that has component, DVI, HDMI or VGA
input.
