RE: Unable to download MCE program guide

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Whitelaces,

Thank you very much for your help. I'm now able to download the program
guide.

In fact, it was a firewall issue. I had thought about this issue before
which I attempted to modify, and after your suggestions, I went back to try
yet again (3rd attempt). What I failed to notice was that there were two
separate source files for MCE - I was modifying only one and not the other.
After configuring both, the download worked properly. <sigh>. Frustration
over. Thank you again.

I read that some users were able to fix this problem by installing the latest
rollup update. Make sure that you have the lasted updates installed
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/mediacenter.mspx) and
try again.

Are you able to access Windows Updates? If the problem is related to the
certificates, then Windows Updates will probably not work either.

Also, check if you have a firewall on your computer, or if you are behind a
firewall/proxy on your network. You can try disabling your firewall to see if
that is the problem. You may need to add an exception to your firewall to
allow MCE to access the internet.

The site that MCE downloads listings from is
https://data.tvdownload.microsoft.com/ If you have a network firewall or a
filtered proxy server, you might try adding an exception for this site.

If you try to view that site in your web browser, it should tell you
"Directory listing denied". This means that you can access the listings
server, and that you can use HTTPS to view it. Any other error message might
indicate some kind of connectivity problems.

I have also read that some users will experience this problem when
(un)installing BladeRunner Pro. If you have done this, then you might need to
delete the registry value "discSvc" at
"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG". Then
re-try the EPG setup, and it should re-create it correctly.

The error message I receive says "Download incomplete. This will be attempted
again later" (something to that effect). By looking through the log entry, I
believe the error code is 14.

And yes, internet connection works fine as I'm able to surf and check email.

In Media Center, after agreeing to use the Guide and the Privacy screens, it
prompts me to enter a postal code in which once I click Next, it says it is
connecting to the internet and then I get the message of Download incomplete.
So I do not even get to the part where it should ask me which provider I am
using.

I have tried playing around with the time and date in windows and changed
the time manually according to my region in addition to checking the time at
the start of the boot cycle.

I've also noticed that in the time&date window under the time sync, I am not
able to syncronize with the link provided (ie. times.windows.com).

Is any of the above information more helpful?

I think we will need some more information before we can help....

What error messages do you receive?
Do you have "normal" internet access through a web browser?
Are you able to download and choose the correct provider (after you enter
your zip code)?

Any other information you can think of might also be helpful, but this is
all I can think to ask about right now.
