Re: XP as a media extender?

Have a look at orb (www.orb.com), it allows you to stream live TV over internet/LAN. Works pretty good on my MCE, and it is easy to set up AND freeware :-)

I can watch recorded TV, stream live TV, ... on my XP pro laptop over the wireless network. Only thing is, when you start using orb, MCE processes are killed on the mediacenter, so you want be able to watch both machines at the same time (at least not through the MCE gui).

A "software" extender package is an often requested feature. However, it has yet to see the light of day. The only options at this time are Orb (www.orb.com), WebGuide4 (http://www.asciiexpress.com/webguide) and similar media server offerings.

Jason,

As I figured, but then what is Microsoft's vision for doing this. They must
assume that users have many PCs, and may want to share media across them in a
more elegant fashion than normal network shares. Does Window's home server
support a function like this?

My goal obviously is to place shift my media center experience to anywhere
within reach of my home network. I'd like to use a cheap laptop as a TV in
the kitchen or elsewhere. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
