Faulty XP Pro Installation.

I am having problems with Windows XP Professional. After upgrading several
applications like IE 6.0 to IE 7.0, then adding Firefox, and a game or two, I
realized that several functions of the operating system seem to be going
badly.
After upgrading to IE 7.0, I lost the sound on this computer. Error
messages indicated that the installed device drivers for the sound card were
not supported by the IE 7.0. I unsuccessfully tried to fix the sound problem.
Then IE 7.0 started acting improperly. Occasionally, pictures would not
appear in e-mails and in web pages. Sometimes, links with the correct
properties would not launch IE 7.0 or a new window.
I installed Firefox. IE 7.0 was still flakey in operation. I tired to
uninstall IE 7.0, and reinstall IE 6.0. I was not successful.
Then Office Access would launch and run. Office always need to “prepare to
install,” then it would try to fix or repair the application by backing up a
data base file. After the repair, Access was re-launched, into the same
routine. Access stopped working.
Outlook and Word started doing strange things. I removed the applications
and re-installed the applications. Finally, it was suggested that I restore
the operating system to a past time when things worked. Windows and Office
auto updating was running, and regularly did auto updating. So when the
restore system was preformed, I feel it uninstalled some security upgrades.
Then the flaky operations of XP Pro, Real Player, Access, Word, IE 7.0 and
other applications would crash, I installed a game on this computer. After
some more time, I started trying to fix all the problems. I did not “repair”
Windows XP Pro, I re-installed the operating system by booting off of the CD.
Firefox and IE 7.0 stopped working. I got IE 6.0 to work (I found it in a
subdirectory). Very little of this computer was working.
I down loaded Real Player, and the sound returned. In a few hours by trying
to load and install IE 7.0, the sound stopped working.
Then Outlook would not work – I lost my e-mail. I uninstalled and
re-installed Office and/or its components.
Here are some of the error messages (or parts of the messages):
1. An exception ‘unhandled win32 exception’ has occurred in MsMpEng.exe –
new instance of visual studio .net 2003.
2. http://r.office.microsoft.com/r/rclidofficeupdate?clid=1033 – application
not found.
3. Security Update For Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 Service Pack2
(kb936181 or kb916281) not installed.
4. Security Update For Cumulative Security Update Internet Explorer for
Windows XP (kb936181) not installed. (kb936181 or kb916281) not installed.
5. Service executable problem – new instance of visual studio .net 2003.
6. c:\programFile\InternetExplorer\iexplorer.exe
7. c:\windows\system32\catsrv.dll – HiddenFaxWindows.
8. Real Player, Windows Media Player, my new game, Office and XP pro are not
working or working properly.
9. I have had error messages with the following files: dirctDB.dll,
inetcomm.dll, wab32.dll, shlwapi.dll and catsrv.dll.
I have more problems, but this is a good list to start with.
Help! What should I do next?
Thank you.
