I actually got rid of it. I wrote to Symantec and got the following
instructions:
please note that this issue has occured due to registry entried has
corrupted and if you uninstall Norton Program, still the registry entries are
there, so you are receiving this error message. In order to resolve this
issue, I suggest that you to manually remove Norton Program will resolve this
issue.
I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you.
Please note that this issue could be caused due to the existence of the
previous version. In order to resolve this issue, I suggest that you to
manually remove the previous version as well as the remnants of the previous
version.
For more information on Uninstalling the Norton product by running the
online removal tool, refer to the document link provided below:
Title: 'Download and run the Norton Removal Tool'

Web URL:

After uninstalling Norton Product, you will have to remove the left over
Symantec folders (Common Shared folders). Follow the steps as mentioned:
-- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows
Explorer.
-- Delete the program installation folders for all Symantec program that
were installed.
If you accepted the defaults, the installation folders will be in C:\Program
Files and will have the name of the program that you installed. Here are the
default program folder names and locations listed by program:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks
Next, configure Windows to show all files.
1. Click on "Windows Key" and select Control Panel
2. Double click on Folder options.
3. Click on View Tab
4. Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
5. Under the "Hidden files" folder, click "Show hidden files and folders."
6. Click on Apply
7. Click on OK.
Now, search for and delete all Symantec folders.
1. Click on "Windows Key" and select Computer.
2. Double click on C Drive
3. Go to the following locations and delete the following folders.
c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\ProgramData\Symantec
- Now delete all the 3 folders.
Finish by cleaning up the Registry:
CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make
any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent
data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Please
see the document linked below for details on making a backup of your registry:

Document ID: 199762382617
Web URL:

NOTE: These keys may not exist on all computers. If either or both exist,
please delete them as instructed.
1. Click Start and then Run.
2. Type REGEDIT into the Run dialog box when it comes up and then click OK.
The Registry Editor will open.
3. Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec
4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard and click Yes to confirm.
5. Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec
6. Press the Delete key on your keyboard and click Yes to confirm.
7. Click on File in the top toolbar and then click Exit.
NOTE: If you are receiving "Access denied" message while deleting any
particular registry entries, I would request that set the permission for that
registry entry and then proceed deleting registry entries. For more
information please refer the link below:

To delete temporary files, please follow the link below:

At this point, your system should be completely clean of Symantec products.
We expect that the solution provided above will resolve your issue.
This alone didn't do it. When I was in the registry, I noticed two other
Symantec files, so I went back and deleted them.
I went to Start, programs, accessories, tools, disk cleanup and found that
there were still temporary files there, so I clicked OK to remove them and
rebooted.
The error message was still there, so I went to Start and searched for
SymAddln and found one entry in C:/Users/user name/Favorites/Internet
Shortcut and deleted it and rebooted . . . and it seems to be gone.
Hope this helps others.

I haven't actuall tried the reinstall/unstall that you suggested. The program.
came pre-installed and I'm not sure how to do that since I've uninstalled it.
I'm open for suggestions.
I did go to Symantec chat and got the response that it wasn't a Symantec
issue (you've gotta love it). After a long retort, one technician gave me a
link, which applied to everything except Windows VISTA, which I had told him
I had, and the next one tried to solve my problem by remote access, but when
he couldn't complete the access suggested that I try again another day. I've
now emailed Symantec a detailed explanation of my problem . . . think I'll
ever get this thing resolved?

Try a reinstall/uninstall (using the Windows Add/Remove).
Try posting this question at the Norton support site, rather than on this
Media Center board.

In that note, he recommeds uninstalling Norton in Add/Remove Programs
rather
than using the Norton Removal Tool that everyone else suggests you use. .
.
but that doesn't help if you've already used the Norton Removal Tool . . .
what do we do now?

I just installed my new PC, uninstalled Norton, used the clean up tool,
and
still have the same problem. Thanks to anyone for their help.

"SymAddLn" looks suspiciously like Norton/Symantec.
If a Norton product has been uninstalled, a cleanup tool available
from the
Symantec WebSite may help to eliminate odd traces left behind.

Have you searched for it in your computer?
Google search shows nothing. If it's only 2days old it will be
wise
to
contact the dealer or the vendor from you have bought it.

What
does this mean? Do I have something hooked up wrong? What is
SymAddln?
I just got the computer 2 days ago, so not much is loaded yet.
I have the same problem with the SymAddln message. When I search

it on Google I get to here, where we are now. I've no Norton stuff
and a fairly new PC, I tried Media Center and received the
SymAddln
message.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
