It could be that once I had got it working the first time, it has been fine since - which I guess might have occured during one of the several system rebuilds I have had to do (or possibly just disabling and re-enabling the restore process on the disk). It also might have been related to the partitioning of my disk to a smaller system partition and a larger data disk - on the whole the system seems much more stable and easier to manage since I did that.
