Hi - What I needed was the IR bug!!!!
I had to order the MCE remote kit - offered via the link from Nigel. It
comes with 2 ports and 2 IR bugs that can be used to control other devices.
My MCE remote only controlled my computer. Thus, my confusion!!!
Thanks for following up with me. I wanted to write this so that others
after us can see the actual solution and know that it does work. You CAN use
DirecTV with MCE and a TV recorder! You just need the IR bug and then it
works like magic. Plug-n-play.
Thanks to you all for your help.
Cheers,
Jennifer

I was out of town for a while and didn't check back, did you find the
receiver?
I was a little confused though, in your OP, you said you had the IR receiver
and remote. Normally if you buy a Media Center system (XP or Vista) with a
tuner preinstalled, it would have the MCE remote kit, which includes all the
necessary IR hardware.

Jaime - thanks -- so, i guess the hardware i need is a IR bug - and i
guess
an IR receiver???
any ideas on where i can get one? possibly a real store and not wait for
ordering one over the internet?

The IR receiver gets plugged into the computer and there is a little IR
bug
that plugs into the IR receiver, the business end of the bug should be
placed over the sensor window on the DirecTV box.
What happen is, you tell MCE to change channels (using the MC remote) and
the computer translates that into the correct command for your DirecTV
box
and sends it to the box through the IR bug.
Placement of the bug is important, if the sensor window is not clearly
visible on the box, use a flashlight and see if that helps find it.

thanks for your replies.
i have a new vista system with a HP usb mce ir receiver and remote. my
directv box has a usb slot - but does not seem to recognize my ir
receiver....
yet, i get sound and picture just find up until the ir setup point in
mce.
from my understanding, i have all the hardware - i just seem to be
missing
something about the setup.
i've tried the ir receiver plugged into my computer (like i had with
cable
tv) and through the directv box - and neither have worked.
any ideas - i'd be most thankful!!!
cheers,
jennifer

anyone have a solution to this??? we all get through the setup, but
cannot
continue due to IR problems
Do you have the *MCE* IR box and IR sender that plugs into that box?
If no, then you cannot continue.
