One of my abiding interests is languages, but still ...
I did have to ask one tech to go slower, but the one that bugged me most was the lady who read them two digits at a time. I kept waiting for the next digit and she kept waiting for an OK from me :-)

I have gone thru a reactivation once when I removed Vista from the same pc and re-installed MCE2005 due to lack of modem drivers and dvd lightscribe software incompatibility. The reactivation wasn't difficult other than asking the man with an East Indian accent to read off the numbers louder and slower lol. Sounds like you probably have experienced enough reactivation that you can understand the numbers in any language lol.

But if you do it's not too bad (nor is it too good...).
At worst, you'll have to call in, at which time you'll find out that the automated system doesn't really work - but it's not too hard to get to a person.
Still, it's twenty minutes wasted.
My problem was that I was trying to set up a combined Parallels/Bootcamp setup and had to do the above about six or eight times. They never denied me, but it was a total PIA. Eventually I gave up the idea, but for reasons of SW stability, not activation.

Plugged all the hard drives into the same connections as the old board and after all the other tiny little connections I turned it on. Glory be...........the computer works again. The only hitch was re-starting to re-set the clock in the bios and that was no problem. I was able to download all the latest Windows Updates with no problem. Hopefully that means I won't have to go thru a re-activation. Thanks a lot for all your assistance.

As far as the OEM license, Microsoft will likely not give you a problem reactivating on a new motherboard. If you get a replacement board with a similar chipset (and hard drive/RAID controller) you may not even have to do a repair install. If you get an identical replacement board you may not even have to reactivate.

Whew..........that was a chore! Disconnected 6 Sata HDs and the IDE HD.
Turned power on & inserted recovery CD. Turned off pc. Turned power back on
and turned on pc; cd drive lite came on but cd didn't update with the
recovery bios! Don't think the bios even tried to copy the file; didn't
hear the sound of a cd spinning. Went ahead and turned off power and
replaced configuration jumper per intel instructions. Re-connected
everything. Black screen......nothing but the power lights for the pc and drives. No activity on HDs. The download site for intel bios for my
motherboard said to copy the bios recovery to a floppy (if it would fit) or
to a cd. I did both in advance of the original bios update just in case. When it failed, tried to recover with the recovery floppy. Failed, so I tried the recovery cd. Failed.'
I have since checked the technical manual for the motherboard and it says
recovery bios can only be used on a sata or ide cd drive or thumb drive!
Floppy bios recovery is not supported for this newish board. Wonder if I
screwed things up using the floppy recovery disk? I don't know why the
motherboard download site for this specific motherboard tells you to use
either floppy or cd when the technical manual specifically states that floppy
recover is not acceptable! What a mess!
I'm probably back to needing a new motherboard I guess. That means I
still don't know the answer to the questions asked about a new O.S. in my
first post lol! Thanks again for your help in any case.

place them after the hard drive? If so unplug the hard drive data cables, maybe you'll be able to boot from your created recovery discs then.

I have a really nice home-built pc with MCE2005 OS and today I attempted
to update the bios with the latest Intel update. I have done this many
times but this time after the update ran the computer was supposed to
re-boot
automatically and I wasn't to touch it for the "next 3 minutes". Usually
the
computer comes back on and the update is installed from the hard drive to
the
bios and then Windows starts and a box pops up saying bios update
successful.
Instead, the computer came back on but after 20 minutes I still had
nothing
on the display. Well, I turned it off and decided to try a bios recovery
floppy I had prepared just in case. Followed all Intel's procedures and
it
didn't work. So, I then tried a bios recovery using a recovery cd I had
already prepared. Didn't work either. Black Screen. It may be because
a
few weeks ago I changed the bios boot order and moved the RAID 0 hard
drives
to first in boot order to see if it would boot faster. It didn't. I
should
have went back and put the cd drive first, floppy second as it was before
but I didn't. It appears the motherboard is now useless. I don't mind
buying a new motherboard but I have the following questions:
1. Will I be able to use my current MCE2005 O.S. or have to buy a new
one?
(They didn't have a retail version, only the OEM version)
2. If I can legally use the current OS and am unable to just move
everything over to the new motherboard and have to re-install the O.S.
will I
be able to continue to access the content on all 7 hard drives?
(a) According to Tom's Hardware site you can move a RAID 0 O.S. from
one Intel board to another and it will configure itself automatically. The
drivers for the ICH8R and ICH9R are the same I guess.
(b) If necessary, I thot maybe I could just format the existing RAID 0
system partition and re-install MCE2005 on the same partition thus leaving
the other partitions and their content intact?
3. If EULA problems prevent re-use of the current MCE2005 license and I
purchase a new MCE2005 or Vista Home Premium license will either or both
OS's
be able to continue to access the content on the other RAID 0 partitions
and
also the other 5 hard drives in the pc?
(a) If required to buy a new OS, can I buy a full retail Vista Home
Premium license and then use it as an upgrade to preserve access to all
the
current content? Or will a clean install allow access to all the
partitions
on the RAID 0 drives and the other 5 drives? I'm worried about Vista
denying
access to the recorded tv programs by saying "content may not be viewed on
this pc". This happened once when I moved a tv movie from one pc to
another
even though the movie was listed as not copy protected .
I'm sorry to go on at such length, but as you see all these alternatives
have me confused.
I really need to save my 2 terabytes of recorded tv. I spend 3 months a
year volunteering for the Forest Service and take the pc along in my RV
and
most places I work have electricity but no tv signal. (Mountains and
forests
lol). The recorded tv content is a real blessing in the evenings and on
rainy days !
Any advice will be appreciated!
