also surge protectors and universal power supplies - even on this
same circuit will degrade the throughput.

Unless you run cable or even use BleB's suggestion of ethernet-powerline

Hi,
I glanced at a few of your articles and have to say that we are on the same
page. I use much of the same hardware that you do.
I.e., originally started out with a DI-764 802.11a/b router back in 2002
back have added a number of DWL-7100AP WAP's to saturate my house in
802.11a. They are the standalone WAP's that I mentioned in my previous
post. I did experiment with their WDS capability a while back though.
Also using their SNMP capability and SNMP monitoring software, it shown that
not only are your pipes cut in half but WDS is really nasty. There was a
lot of really nasty packet collision going on. As "standalone" WAP's, they
have been running great though. I get the upstream data to them by any
means necessary other than "repeating". Putting a wireless-ethernet bridge
in front of them works great. Running them as standalone WAP's, but using
the same SSID/channel basically turns them into "repeaters" without taking
cutting the pipe in half. My DLink PCMCIA card in my laptop, and even my
DLink CF card in a PDA, are able to switch over to the strongest WAP
automatically and seamlessly. As you know, this consumer junk (I consider
everything by DLink, Linksys, etc to be junk) can work great, but also can
be very tempermental. These consumer manufacturers are worthless for
information on anything other than very basic setups. The only way you can
find answers is to play with the hardware yourself. I've become very
intimate with the DWL-7100AP and know exactly which firmware works better
for some modes, while which other firmware works better with other modes.
I've also successfully done funky things with them such as on a single
DWL-7100AP, run one radio as a WAP while using the other radio as a client.
Only one of the older firmwares will handle it. The others immiedietly
crash when you attempt it. Also ran a radius server for them for a short
period, mainly just to see it work...
I'll be going on to 802.11n once it becomes ratified and has gone through
the growing pains of the first generation, but 802.11a has served me very
well for the last five years...
