Component supports many resolutions and AFAIK was first introduced as a way to get better quality analog video from DVD's using either interlaced or progressive scan (480i or 480p) from a DVD player. On HDTVs it also normally supports 720p, and 1080i.

As far as I know component video is the Analog High Definition input, it is
the input to HDTVs that do not have DVI or HDMI input.
Since that Liquid Video is a HDTV editor, the component video input should
be the analog input for HDTV.
Quote from Key Features page.
Liquid Pro Breakout Box
IEEE-1394, Composite, component and S-video video I/O. Stereo and S/PDIF
audio I/O as well as surround sound monitoring via a USB-2 connection.
Choose the video and audio connection that suits the footage and the
equipment available. Liquid Pro adds access to the uncompressed codec for
high quality output and MPEG IBP captures at DVD-compliant bit rates for
streamlined DVD production.
BTW, the manuals are here under the heading Documention.

I hate to possibly be a stick in the mud but I could only find in the
specifications that you could input HDV(which I assume means 720p based on
the other specs) over an IEEE interface. It appears that the other inputs
S-Video,. composite and component only provided for DVD SD resolutions.
I could not find a link to the user's manual which would probably clarify
exactly what resolutins could be received over which interfaces.

That is the hard part, getting the pre-built, DCR certified machine. For
us that built our own machine, none of those Cable Cards are available to
us. Only to the Big boys. Somebody with the big bucks to pay for the
certification.
It gets down to the Digital high definition service requiring somebody to
PAY.
There is one way to record High Definition TV, other that OTA ATSC
broadcast.

The above unit has Component Video input.

Uh, you're not correct. Vista supports CableCard, ATI makes CableCard
tuners and any number of OEM's are shipping Digital Cable Ready PC's.
Sadly, the only way you can get a CableCard tuner is with a new,
pre-built, DCR certified machine.

Pointless maybe, but you have to blame the Digital Millennium Act of
1998 for that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA
The only HDTV we can legally receive is ATSC Over the Air broadcast.
(In the USA). Not true in other countries.
In Windows Media Center 2005 or Vista, the only thing PVR works on is
standard TV or ATSC broadcast. Nobody is allowing a Cable card for MCE.
The exception is Dishnetwork and DirectTV have PVRs for their system
that does record HDTV from their system.

I dont understand why they would make one with an HDTV tuner if you
cant use it to receive HDTV from cable companies, seems kind of
pointless doesnt it?

The PVR 500 is a dual NTSC tuner card if you want a dual tuner card
with one NTSC tuner and one HDTV tuner then you should get the PVR
1600. If you are using MCE make sure you get the MCE version since it
includes the MCE remote and the MCE IR receiver & blaster and not the
Hauppauge WinTV remote.
