Since day 1 (March 2003) I've backed up my current files on CD-RW discs. Month by month the task has become less reliable. Usually one of the backup discs can be erased and rewritten successfully; the second has been a worsening problem. The July backup of disc #2 was disastrous--it would not erase, "Properities" showed it to be 100% used, and all usual methods and programs were not responding. At the end I received an error message: "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." I took the CD-ROM test in "Help & Support" and passed, but the problem won't go away! What could be the problem? How can I correct it? Is a new E drive in the offing? I really need some help. Bill H.
CD-RW discs are not all that dependable.
I never got more than a dozen or so reuses out of one.
Try new discs, and if that fails, buy a new drive.
I saw a Sony DVD writer advertised for $40 today (I think it was the Fry's on-line ad in a local paper). Get that and some DVD RWs and you can back up more data per disc - but they still won't last forever, IMO.
Oh - I just thought - are you using packet writing (AKA UDF, I think) - such as Nero InCD? If so, then it's even worse than I said, as far as dependability is concerned. In my experience, at least.
