Re: Order MCE for new PC until Vista SR2? Palm says doesn't support MC

MCE 2005 is Windows XP Pro with SP2. Some software products say they aren't supported on MCE but run just fine. Others may have issues with software and services they want to run conflicting with Media Center. And some check the version of the OS programmatically and when they don't get the answer they expect, they won't install.

You'd do better to find a newsgroup related to the Palm software you want to run and find out if its working for any other MCE users.

I'm reading conflicting info re Media Center Edition.

I need a powerful laptop. I might not have the budget to get another in the
next few years, and I hope to avoid repeating the long research cycle I've
had of the last few months.

A key problem has been that, per some experts, it's premature to go to Vista.

Finally reconciled to that advice, I thought it might be most productive to
get a PC with MCE, or possibly to install it myself (e.g. from Action Pack,
which I qualify for but presently don't have).

I read with interest the thread
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter&tid=11b1649d-2b39-48ad-8db0-f8817f1f8350&cat=en-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP_Media_Center_Edition. The first
states that aside from corporate-oriented capabilities (domain), the Media
Center Edition or editions are XP Pro. The wikipedia article doesn't
contradict this idea.

However, regarding Palm Desktop, Palm states:

http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,Case=obj(37448)

Windows XP editions not supported by Palm devices: Media Center Edition,
Professional x64 Edition, Tablet PC Edition
Solution ID : 37448

Current devices support the following versions of Windows XP:

* Home Edition
* Professional

These versions of Windows XP are not supported:

* Media Center Edition
* Tablet PC Edition
* Professional x64 Edition

The article was updated in May of this year, and thus presumably is current.
I infer from the article that MCE is something other than XP Pro with
additional capabilities.

Please advise as to what to do, and whether I'd best just go with XP Pro on
the new laptop. I'd also appreciate advice re the upgrade plan; I've read
that Media Center is not in the one or more of the Vista versions--the
non-enterprise business one, I think.

Thanks in advance for your help.
