Re: Digital STB and Digital Tuner

So even when the EPG says 'digital channels' (for me that's 2-99 unencrypted)
it's analog??? I don't know. I'm sooo lost.

My statement of 'plug into my tuner' refers to connecting the coax to the PC
tuner card coax port.

I'm thinking that, when they hooked me up for digital w/ HD, they split the
cable one too many times. The digital STB can play it fine but my analog PC
TV tuner card can't, thus the picture 'noise'

Even with digital cable service channels 2-99 are normally still the same
analog NTSC signals you got before. Only channel 200 and higher are in
digital format.
When you say "plug directly into your tuner" what are you referring to? I
assume that you mean the tuner in your TV and is it the same TV as you were
using before?

I don't fully understand your answer. I'm not sure how NTSC, ATSC, QAM, et
al
relate to digital, over the air, encrypted, etc. I'm dumb in that regard,
so
feel free to treat me as such :D

You said,
"these channels are normally a subset of the channels that you can
receive using
the ATSC digital tuner with an antenna so your really don't gain
anything."

I don't have an antenna, just cable. At this point, I just want a clear
picture -- like I had before I got digital service (standard channels, no
STB). The cable company says the signal in my cable is unchanged and so
pluggng the cable directly into my tuner should work like before, but it
doesn't. The picture is so bad (on standard channels) I cannot watch.

Both the Hauppauge 1600 and the Aver Media(780/ PCI combo tuner) have QAM
digital support as well as OTA ATSC digital support . Therefore they can
receive the unencrypted digital channels from cable. However, these
channels are normally a subset of the channels that you can receive
using
the ATSC digital tuner with an antenna so your really don't gain
anything.

Most of the posts are over a year old. Looking for updates

1. ARE THERE any digital tuners that play digital cable without the
STB?

if not

2. How can I maintain the digital clarity from my STB through my MCE
2005?
If I bought a digital/HD tuner, can I at least pipe the STB signal
through
a
digital/HD tuner and so use my monitor as my TV?
