Re: update rollup refuses to unstall on my pc {?}

You will still get a log file from your attempted install. The results of
your most recent attempt will be appended to whatever is already there.

The .log file was saved when I tried to install a rollup update I
downloaded
from the Microsoft web site priveouswly.

Windows update saves non such log files on my computer. Right?

Check the log that was previously referenced. It should have some error
codes within it. Post them here so that someone can take a look.

I did like I was told. Updating to Rollup 2 failed again. No error code
was specified.

Whoops

I linked to the wrong tool

Here is the correct tool
http://salloway.org.uk/mediacenter/util/index.htm#ident

If the inline anchor doesn't work right in your web browser, goto the
Media Center Ident Set part of the page.

Thank you for your reply again: The web site your link does direct to
provides more than one program.

Your link goes to somewhere in between! Which was the program
you want me to download and run on my computer? The Media
Center Ident Set on the very bottom of the page, right? Nothing else?

Thank you,
Steve

Ok, as I suspected..

Run this utility by Mark Salloway.

Media Center Ident Set
http://salloway.org.uk/mediacenter/util/index.htm#config

Something has caused the ident value in the registry to be set
improperly.
This utility will fix it, and then Update Rollup 2 should install
normally.

A common cause of this issue is that a user would install Windows XP
Service Pack 2 up top of Media Center 2005. This is a redundant
step, as Media Center 2005 already has Windows XP SP2 integrated into
it. An unfortunate side effect of this redundant step is that the
Media Center ident value is set to 2.8, which prevents Media Center
2005 Update Rollup 2 from installing.

Can you post the details?

It's hard for anyone to guess which fix would be appropriate if you
don't help us by telling us the exact error message.

I suspect the ident value is wrong, but it would definitely prevent
a wild goose chase if we knew what the error message is.

What error(s) are you seeing?

The contents of KB900325.log in your Windows directory should
give you/us some clues.

Hello dear fellows!

I have got Windows Media Center which is fantastic
and so forth. Now, I'm in trouble updating to update
rollup which I have had installed on the computer,
previously. I'm reading about a Framework 1.1
hotfix to remove, apparently not installed. So, no
solution for ME.

Thanks,
Steve
