What a great help your answer was to me. I did exactly what you told me to do
and now my machine is working perfectly.
Some of the downloads were corrupted(?) and I had to delete them and retry a
couple of times, but I eventually got it.
My wife thinks I'm a brain, but we all know it was you. I'll say a special
prayer for you tonight.

I have a Sony Vaio computer PCV RS-310, which had XP Home. I had XP
Professional installed; it worked OK but was slow. Iwas advised to get a
new
hard drive which I just installed. When I put Windows back in it, I can't
change the display settings. Under System Tools, nothing is listed for
display. Under Display Properties,Settings, the screen resolution is
640x480
pixels and the color is at lowest, 4 bit. Nothing I do will change these
settings.
I have gone to Sony for their downloads but they will not work. Sony tells
me my computer is not set up for XP Professional; so how come it worked on
the old hard drive?
I can't use or even install my printer because the settings are so low.
HELP, please.

Home support for PCV RS-310
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVRS310®ion_id=1
You need to install the original motherboard drivers. (You may read Windows
XP Clean Install: in the yellow box on this page).
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCVRS310&UpdateType=Original
You need:
Realtek AC97 Audio Device Driver
Intel i865 Chipset Driver
Realtek RTL8139 Ethernet Controller Driver
Intel 8245G/8265G Graphics Controller Driver.
Maybe this driver if you are using the original Sony Monitor:
Sony Monitor INF Utility
You may need the other drivers on the above page also depending on what
devices you have installed on your computer.
I recommend that you download without using Download Taxi. (Download each
driver one at a time).
After you get all of the original drivers installed, check for any updates
you may need.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCVRS310&UpdateType=Updates
Running Microsoft Update will find most of the updates you need.
