Re: Audio help!

All of the drivers and downloads fit for my computer will only work with
Media Center, or at least that's what he's claiming. He says none of the
information on the Sony website will help me now because I installed XP
Pro
instead of MCE. :(

So who is saying that? That person is plain wrong.

The OS used for MCE 2005 is Windows XP Pro SP2. There are some parts of MCE
that is not in XP Pro. Those parts are the parts you say you do not want.

Those downloads for your model of computer, have very little to do with
having MCE 2005 installed. As long as you only use the Motherboard drivers,
it does not matter if you have MCE 2005 or Windows XP Pro SP2 as your OS.

I don't know what problem you had with the download.

I am running Windows XP SP2 Home. (I am not on my MCE 2005 computer) And I
just downloaded the SigmaTel® High Definition Audio Device Driver. And I do
not have a Sony computer.

I clicked on the link in this message, (this link)
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFE550G&UpdateType=Everything&SelectOS=16

Scrolled down the page until I found the Sigma Tel Audio driver. Then I
clicked on Download now (beside the driver), I got the download page, click
on Download Now (without Download Taxi). I got the Windows XP warning
window, Click on Save, choose the location on my Hard Drive where I wanted
to save the file. Clicked the save button.

No problem.
I now have a 5,742 KB application on my hard drive named
STDAUD-01035004-US.EXE that I downloaded from Sony.

I would not use the Download taxi. As it requires some extra software.
If you want to download multiple files, do them one at a time.

I tried going to the actual Sony website but none of their downloads work.

Any other suggestions? Or do I just need to give up and buy the restore
cd's
through Sony and deal with having MCE again? I just REALLY don't want to
do
that.

Maybe you are not screwed.

You need to install the Sony Motherboard driver for the Audio chip.
You want this one:
SigmaTel® High Definition Audio Device Driver

The everything for Microsoft Media Center 2005 OS. ( Windows XP Pro SP2)

Good evening. I'm new here and also not great with computers, so
forgive
me
if i'm asking something that most would consider so simple. Alright
here's
my
story:

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FE550G back last February (2006) and was
extremely
happy with it. About 6 months in, things started going downhill FAST.
My
CD-Drive went out completely but I didn't think anything about it
because
I
never used it. I had to reformat it probably close to 4 times in the
last
8
months but always used the System Restore, so everything was always as
it
was
in the beginning. It started messing up beyond just restoring it, so I
bought
a brand new hard drive and cd-drive. I just installed the two yesterday
and
got Windows up and running. The computer was originally bought with XP
Media
Center but honestly, I didn't use anything on it except your basic
Internet
Explorer so the whole Media Center thing didn't matter to me. Keeping
this
in
mind yesterday, I installed XP Pro. I just figured it'd be better
because
I
wouldn't have to worry about all of those annoying programs coming
pre-installed with Media Center. Everything was working fine until I
realized
a MAJOR problem: My audio wasn't working. It would play the basic
system
sounds but no music or audio from videos. I went to the Volume Control
and
it
tells me I have no mixer device. I looked it up online and tried a few
different "solutions" but nothing fixed it. I finally called Sony and
they
told me, quite rudely might I add, that I screwed it all up by not
reinstalling MCE and that I should contact Microsoft hoping for a
generic
driver for Pro because otherwise, i'm screwed.

So after all of my rambling and telling my entire life story it seems
(hehe), do any of you know of a generic driver or a quick fix for my
problem?
Any tips would be so great!

Thanks a ton!
