Re: Additional Feature for WMC

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't seem to have the spine to go against the
record and movie industries, and I know the record industry is fighting it
tooth and nail. And to add to that, a lot of the bands themselves don't want
their lyrics made public.

So, it's a nice request, but stands about as much a chance as Bush does of
winning in Iraq...

Dana & Jaime,

I do understand both of your concern about standardization and legality
issue, but as I have mentioned in my previous posting, I don't think
legality
is an issue as far as what we wanting to do with it. If you owned the
album,
you're rightfully own the lyrics to the song so long as you not using it
to
reproduce different version of the song in any way shape or form, legality
has no burden on our shoulder. Dana, as far as lyrics goes, I don't
believe
it has to be in any special format other than text format, unless you
streaming it from the internet. I don't know if you or Jaime have ever use
a
program called MediaMonkey, but that's what I am currently using to embed
album arts and lyrics for most of my MP3s and WMAs, that being said, I
don't
ever have to stream them from the internet at all. In my opinion, I don't
think this feature is difficult for Microsoft to integrate into their WMC,
just hope they'll take it in a consideration.

I agree it would be cool, but Media Center, just like Windows Media
Player
(and other players), shows the album art because it is linking to a site
that collects album art and associates it with the album, and stores it
in a
standardized database. Microsoft is not doing that research, just as MS
is
not the ones collecting all the Program Guide info, they are merely
licensing it from another company that keeps the database of TV listings.

To my knowledge, no one has such a site for song lyrics and it would be a
much, much more complicated problem. Associating a digital image with a
specific album is pretty straightforward as each CD has a unique ID code.
To
do the same for songs, you first would need to collect all the lyrics
(assuming they are published and available legally), then not only store
them for each track, but you would also need to create and store a
time-code, so that the lyrics are displayed at the correct time as the
song
is playing (or I supposed they could just be displayed all at the same
time). You would also have to keep track of different versions of the
song
for any lyric changes.

I suppose they could have a way to manually link an album to a text file
with the lyrics, then if you wanted, you could collect the info yourself,
MCE or MP could display it while the song was playing. Maybe this can
already be done by programming a new visualization scheme, I'm not
familiar
if there is an SDK for that in MP or MCE.

Dana,

I do not see that there's no official site or record company hosting
song
lyric as a problem. Because nowadays, you can google and find lyrics
pretty
much for any song you could think of posted by fans and music lovers
around
the world, if not, you could also transcribe it yourself.

Off the topic! In my opinion, record companies do their best to keep
song
lyrics of the internet not because of legality or copyrights issue, but
because they don't want to use their own resources and times to provide
general public free service. As you know, if you the song, you
basically
have the lyrics, hence, what's the point of trying to keep it off the
internet?

Anyway, you can embed song lyrics as if though you can embed album art
into
a song, and if WMC is able to display embedded album art, I don't see
any
reason why WMC can't display embedded song lyrics.

The only problem with that is...where do you get the lyrics? There's
no
official site, and the bands and record companies seem to go to great
lengths to keep their lyrics off the internet.

To Whom It May Concern,

A really cool, useful and practical must have feature for WMC is the
ability
to display song lyric while it's playing, I don't think I'm speaking
for
myself here.
