Go to Microsoft update, as that's where your problems started.
Agent.exe is Microsoft's Update Agent.
Over on the left hand side of the site click on change settings.
Scroll down to the bottom of the next page and enter a check in the box next
to "Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only"
then click the Apply changes now button. You may need to reboot afterwards,
then wait till Microsoft provides a fix for the problem before using
Microsoft Update again.
That's the easiest fix for the problem currently available other fixes
require one to clean up remnants of older versions of Windows Update Agent
then download and install several fixes then register a bunch of DLL's.

The phishing filter was only temporary. I am still having major problems.
I
did an OS re-install, and that did nothing. Agent.exe is still there
taking
up all my CPU power!

One thing I did that really helped was I turned off the Phishing filter.
Once I did that, I noticed that the CPU usage meter went down and stayed
down
rather consistently. I will go to the website you mentioned, and do
appreciate the input.

The problem is a recent update from Microsoft called "windows update
agent"
causing svchost to commandeer your CPU.
Read about it here including some possible fixes that don't seem to
work for
everyone.

IMHO the best thing to do is turn off automatic updates and update
manually
the second tues of each month till after microsoft fixes it.
Agent has nothing to do with Norton.

I suggest you try full virus and spyware scans from F8 Safe Mode this
can
catch offenders that you don't catch from normal run mode.

Yes, I googled it and it showed that it probably runs behind
Installshield.
I actually disabled my internet temporarily, and it helped a lot.
Not
sure
what to do though when I'm online, which is usually 99% of the time
I am
on
my computer!

did you google agent.exe?

Mine is doing the same thing. 99% CPU in use with agent.exe
using 90%
of
that! I hit it with three different spyware/malware applications
to
no
avail. Shut down Norton to no avail. Took out four programs
that run
in
the
background to try to gain some power back, but agent.exe is a CPU
HOG!!!
What can be done to stop it? I've been cussing my computer out
for
three
weeks now over this? Short of a full OS reinstall, is there
anything
to
do?

As an experiment, try shutting down Norton for a bit and see
what
happens
(disconnect from the Internet if you want to be safe). I have
seen
several
systems with performance issues that were tied to Norton (or
other
antivirus) software.
Have you tried shutting down agent.exe to see if that is the
culprit?

I've been sitting through 10, 15, even 20 minutes of waiting
for my
CPU
to
accept even the most elemental commands! I can understand
when I
run
Photoshop that I'm using 40% but what the hey is going on with
"agent.exe"
that uses 40% and more? I've simplyfied my disks and desktop
by
having
NO
screensaver, no desktop pictures, no games no programs other
than
Explorer
(windows & internet), etc. I have the latest version of
Norton
Antivirus
and
my computer is protected from invasions. I've delved into the
background
runnings and am completely at a loss for what is going on.
Any
suggestions?
