JW:
Thank you for your post. I do realize all of things you stated. Perhaps my
question was unclear.
When watching a 1080i direct broadcast on a 1080p display, the picture
appeared to my eye to have better resolution than the same broadcast
recorded and played back in Vista Media Center. That was not true when I
compared a 720p direct broadcast to its playback. This lead me to suspect
that the Best quality setting in Media Center might be down scaling higher
resolutions for recording and playback. My suspicion grew further when I
noticed 1080 WMV HD content appeared to my eye as good as the direct
broadcast; only 1080i Recorded TV seemed less so to me.
However, according to Gary Tsang in the following post, this is not true.
Thus, I will just have to chalk this up to differences in content or poor
"video memory" on my part.

If you are using an HDTV tuner then the recording quality settings have no
effect since the HDTV video is allready MPEG2 encoded and can not be
changed. The quality settings only apply to analog tuner inputs which are
encoded by the encoder chip on the tuner/video capture card and thefore
the encoding quality can be varied.
You also have to realize that only programs "filmed" with HD cameras will
be broadcast at real HD resolutions. If you are watching a "HD"
broadcast of a program "filmed" with a SD camera then the network adds
black or gray sidebars to the actual video and then they upscale the
resolution to their networks standard HD resoltuion.

When HD programs are recorded in Vista Media Center, the recording
quality is always set to Best. However, when a 1080i broadcast is played
back at a
display resolution of 1920 x 1080, the picture quality appears to be no
more
than 720. Is the Best quality Vista MC has to offer merely 720? What
resolution is Vista Media Center using at Best quality for HD recordings?
In contrast, playback of WMV HD files encoded at 1080 seem to playback at
1080. Am I just seeing things here? What is the situation?
Thanks!
