I am in the process of building a medium level gaming computer for my
grandson.
I had installed all the hardware except the sound card and had not loaded
any of the drivers that came with the hardware except the driver for the
modem. Windows XP SP2 was loaded and it operated just fine. I then
installed
the sound card and loaded the drivers for it and then loaded the drivers
that
came with the motherboard. I then rebooted the computer and the
background
screen came up, but the icons and the bottom bar did not load. So I did a
reboot and again the same thing happened. I tried one more time and this
time
the background screen came up along with the icons and the bottom bar. I
have
tried rebooting a number of times and get mixed results -- some times
the
icons and bottom bar do not load and sometimes they do.

What should I do?? I have thought about trying to remove some of the
drivers and then booting up to see if this made a difference. Is the right
direction toward solving the problem??

Any help will be appreciated.

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI
CPU: Intel E6600
CPU Cooler: Coolmaster RR-LCH-P9E
Memory: Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB
Video Card: EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR 8800 GTS 640MB
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD2500KS 250GB SATA2
O/S: Windows XP Home Edition with SP2
Power Supply: 630 watt
Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

You must have the Motherboard drivers.
The order of installing the Motherboard drivers is usually not important,
however the motherboard drivers should be installed right after you get
Windows XP running. Everything that comes after uses the motherboard
drivers.

Did you install the video card driver?

Install the manufacturers drivers for the sound card and video card and the
modem.
