I have an new HP Laptop with MCE and I found that as long as I did not put a
DVD in the drive before I tried to write it it works just fine when I put in
the DVD when is asks me to.

I have an HP machine that came installed with MCE. The first month or so,
everything was fine. The DVD-RW (HP Lightscribe) initially worked with no
problem, as I was able to make the 'recovery' DVDs just after the machine
was
purchased.

However, after about 3-4 weeks, the DVD drive description in the hardward
profile now shows "CD-ROM" for the description. Also, if you put any
media
in the drive, it spins and spins for about 2-3 minutes, then nothing. You
can double click on the drive, and it shows nothing is in it. But you can
also right-click on the drive and select "Eject" and the drive opens. So
the
communication is there. I've tried several different DVD-RW and DVD-ROM
drives, and each time, MCE will initially recognize the drive correctly
(via
the balloon at the bottom right on the task bar), but then will change to
"CD-ROM" about 3-4 seconds after it shows the accurate description.

I've updated the firmware on the drive, and downloaded and installed any
drivers that I could find. I was able to recover it briefly by going back
a
couple of restore points, but eventually it disappeared soon after again.
HP's response is "re-install", which, if I do, I'm doing it with Windows
XP
and not MCE this time.

Anyone seen this happen at all? I've been messing with PCs for about
10-15
years, and I've never seen anything like this.
