Re: peer to peer not working but internet does.

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

my network is like this
1) desktop to router
2) router to modem
3) wireless laptop to router

laptop can go onto internet so can desktop but the wtwo computers can not
share files. File sharing is on in both and so is internet sharing. As far
as I can see there is no reason why they do not communacate. When I try to
connect the two the laptop address is changed and then i get the diolog box
that I do not have permision to connect.

Wayne,

I'm in trouble? Surely you can set up your Internet Connection? That was all
that was working beforehand?

You may need to describe your network in detail. My picture is this:
1. Desktop with Modem (Built-in/USB/Ethernet?) to connect to Internet.
2. Wireless Router connected to Desktop with Ethernet Cable.
3 Laptop with Wireless attempting to connect to Wireless Router.

Desktop uses Internet Connection Sharing to allow Laptop to connect to
Internet.

The link that I am unfamiliar with is the Router. It does not seem to be
there to function as a Router per se, rather as a means of connecting your
Laptop wirelessly to the DeskTop and onward to the Internet.

You may have said previously, but was your Laptop connecting to the Internet
via the the Router > Desktop > Modem?

I wish someone else would step in and help here. I can only speak from
experience, and my experience with Routers is zilch.

I Have tried to take everything off and restart from from scratch. Nothing
seems to work.

Thanks Wayne. .... Right you are.... "Peer-to-Peer" is a broad term that
simply means there is no Server involved.... I'm learnin' :)

And I've also discovered that for "Infrastructure" Wireless Networks, the
*Wireless* Network Setup Wizard should be run prior to running the
ordinary
Network Setup Wizard.

In my case, having nothing but air between my Laptop and Printer, the
Wireless Network Setup Wizard is not appropriate because I have a
"Computer-to-Computer" (ad hoc) network where no Access Point is
involved.
Come to think of it, neither did the ordinary Network Setup Wizard have
anything to do with the Wireless Printer setup.

The Network Setup Wizard really shone when it came to connecting the
XBox360.

However, on occassion, when things inexplicably stopped working, I would
delete/remove all Network Connections, including Internet and start all
over
again. Have you tried that?

Yes I have used the control panel > netwoek setup wizard and it does
not
seem
to change anything.

As far as computer to computer... I am using a router to access the
internet
and join the two computers to form a in-house network. Only one
computer
is
capable to connect via wireless and the other only connects via cable
so I
have to use a router to connet the two.

Have you tried running through the Control Panel > Network SetUp
Wizard
again. My network consists of
a Laptop, an XBox 360 (with Internet Connection Sharing) and a
Wireless
Printer connected "ad hoc"ly. Totally different to you, but that
Wizard
seems to do things that it would take a millenium for a mug like me to
learn
and implement. I discovered that it even fixes existing errors and
mistakes.
You should leave Windows Firewall on.

BTW, I'm sure you are following the correct procedure, but I'm a
little
confused about terminology. "Peer-to-peer"? Isn't it the same as "ad
hoc"
and "computer-to-computer", which don't involve an intermediary device
such
as an Access Point or Router. The alternative setup being an
"Infrastucture"
network which does involve the extra Hardware?

I have disabled the firewalls on both and nothing has changed.
