Re: KB931784 Update results in Blue Screen

Hi again AllanF:
I finally couldn't resist looking at the windows update site you
suggested and took a peek! I notice that several posters had various
problems with that particular update and there are some solutions I could
probably successfully use to properly install it.
But, if it messes up the computer too bad the resulting re-install of the
operating system from the Gateway back-up partition (if it survives) or the
recovery disks I made are just as much work as I would go thru if a darn
virus takes over my computer, what with all the updates I would have to
download on a 56k modem. This particular computer isn't used online for
anything but Microsoft updates, guide updates and AVG anti-virus updates so
my chances of getting in trouble seem pretty slim to me. After all,
Microsoft wouldn't have any malware on their site would they......not
counting the updates that is. Thanks again, if I had more courage I think
you have directed me to the solution but you can lead a horse to water but
you can't make it drink it they say LOL.

At least you have the number of that bus. :)

The other Forum has knowledgable contributers concerning Windows Updates,
and a quick search of the Forum reveals some unrelated (?) problems with
KB931784 and ntkernel-type Updates. Worth a quick look if you are
interested.

Hi AllanF:
Thanks for the info. I'm almost afraid to go to a newsgroup about
update problems! I may be better off not knowing the problems that
could/might crop up when updating my operating system. I think for now,
I
just won't install the update that I know caused problems to second
computer
with the exact same software, operating system and previous
updates.........after all who would jump in front of an oncoming bus
twice!

Hi xiowan,

Fun and games. .... :) You seem to have identified the trigger for the
BSOD
and the other problems. As a workaround, you may be able to evaluate
whether
or not you really need the Update.

From the Security Bulletin:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-022.mspx

..... Vista is listed as "Non-affected Software"

..... Vulnerability Details: Mitigating Factors..... "An attacker must
have
valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to exploit this
vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by
anonymous users."

What happened? You could try asking the question here:

Hi All:
Today I installed Update KB931784 on one of my computers with MCE2005
O.S.
Half way thru that download windows shut down and displayed a blue
screen
warning: OxOOOOOO7E (OxF64A2OE9, OxA8E57C8O, OxAEE5797C). I googled
some
of
the warning identifying numbers and wasn't able to find anything wrong
with
the computer. After re-starting everything worked ok and I went back
to
Update and downloaded and installed all the other updates except that
one
and
re-started with no problems. So.............I thot, why not try
re-install
KB931784, which showed up in update history as failed to install.
Whoopie.....it installed ok and said re-start computer. I
did........but
then found that I couldn't move any of the desktop icons around and
thought
I'd re-start again to see if that solved anything! Lo &
Behold.....clicking
shut-down wouldn't work....for shutdown, re-start or hibernate.
Hmmmm.....not good. So I uninstalled KB931784 and was able to re-start
and
shut down without problem. All problems seem to disappear with the
un-install. When I re-installed it that 2nd time I did notice that it
picked
up downloading at the point that windows had shut down during the first
try.
My question is......what happened and should I try again and is it ok
to
install on my other MCE2005 pc and on my Vista pc if it's one it's
critical
updates?
