I have a Media Center 2005 with all updates. It has never recognized any
of
my 4 different flash drives in any USB port, even though it recognizes
and
works with USB wireless mouse and USB floppy drive.

I have updated drivers for each flash drive. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled all of the USB ports shown in Device Manager with no
results.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

It is probably not the USB ports that are at fault.

Although Flash drives are supposed to be recognized as mass storage
drives,
that may not be.
Do you have a install disk for your flash drives?
If so you need to install the driver for Windows to "see" the drives.

Mass storage drives normally show in My Computer or Windows Explorer as a
'removable disk'. And sometimes with the disk label of the flash drive.

Do you get the 'connect' sound when you plug in the flash drive?
If you do then the flash drive is present in My Computer or Windows
Explorer.

When I plug in the flash drive, the tray message is "Windows does not
recognize this device." None of my flash drives has an install disk. I
downloaded the current drivers from each website.

You have not said the brand or the model number of your flash drive.

That Message is one that Windows gives anytime it can not find a device
driver.

Open your Device Manager, found at Start > Control Panel > System, click on
Hardware tab, Click Device Manager button.
Look for any yellow or red question marks.

If you find a question mark by a flash drive device, remove it.
Reboot Computer.

Before you plug in any flash drive, install the manufacturers software, for
that drive.
Reboot.

Plug in flash drive. Windows should then find new hardware and install the
driver.

All USB devices should have the software installed before you connect the
device.
The exception is when there are built in drivers in Windows XP.

The Specifications for the device will usually say so.

You might get more information from your Windows Help and Support. Start >
Help and Support.
Search for "installing devices overview" without quotes. Under Suggested
Topics, click on the Installing devices overview.

The flash drive brands are Kingston, Ativa, Memorex and Fuji. I have downloaded all the latest drivers and gone through all the Device Manager exercises.

The mystery to me is why any other type of USB device works on this computer
except for flash drives. All these flash drives work on my other desktop, my
laptop and other people's laptops I have tried them on.
