Re: Can't burn recorded tv to DVD!

I am using Fujifilm currently. I have also used Memorex. Since I wrote that
last post, I am still not having any problems. My issue turned out to be the
burner, not the discs and not the computer. Since I changed it out, I have
had no problems. Which is funny because everyone told me it wouldn't be a
burner issue.
Sometimes the discs burn in 10 minutes other times an hour. That one is
perplexing to me since I am burning an edited hour long tv show and there is
just no telling why one takes longer than another.

What brand of DVD+RW are you using?.

I must concur with Gene here. I have been using +RW since I got MCE and only
once in awhile do I have an issue. I did have a spell where it quit working
and I could not record the DVD RW's, and I couldn't find a fix. I changed
the DVD drive and everything started working again. So I marked that
experience up to the DVD drive.
On ccasion I get a show that just won't burn to a disc and I have no answer
for it. I am currently experiencing that but am still in trial mode to see
if I can find a solution. I think sometimes there are just glitches that go
unexplained and true it should be easier.
I use MCE to burn the DVD's and I also use Videoredo to edit out the
commericals. I have never used another program to burn a DVD that was a
recorded television show.
I hope this helps in some way.

Does anybody know why Media Centre won't let me burn recorded TV

If you haven't got the Video DVD option, you need to google for

Persnoally, I'd download the trial of Nero 7 and use that, and
if you

I have a dvd burner which supports dvd+-RW and I was using a
dvd-rw.
Thanks,

A DVD-RW has to be formatted just as you would a floppy or hard
drive. The process is called UDF formatting and there are several
different types. For instance Nero uses a program called InCD to
UDF format a RW disk and to view that disk on another computer it
to has to have InCD installed. If you take that disk and try to
view it on a system that has Roxio Adaptec UDF software on it or
no UDF packet writing software at all, the disk will appear blank.
Read Write DVD's are a storage media you can use much like a hard
drive, with it you can erase, drag and drop, overwrite existing
files, re-format etc.
For media playback you should use + or - R DVD's not + or - RW
DVD's.
No, that's only true if you're trying to use a DVD-+RW like a (very
large) floppy or another hard drive, e.g., for drag and drop file
copying (or other Windows Explorer type file copying operations) on
the fly.
For making "regular" DVDs, either data or videos, i.e., for burning,
you just put them into the drive and burn them exactly like a DVD-
+R.
There is one exception: if the RW disc has been used before. Then it
has to be erased before being burned as a DVD.
I burn DVD RWs as above occasionally without any problems, so I know
it should work.
Which means I have no idea what's causing the OP's problem.

Then how do you erase it without it being UDF formatted in the first place?
Then how do you play it on any other system or standalone DVD player that
won't read that particular type of UDF formatting.
Not to mention you can purchase 100 Verbatim DVD-R Disks on sale for around
thirty dollars and Verbatim DVD-RW disks are over a dollar each. I've been
using DVD-R and -RW disk many years and I've never figured out how to get
any system to recognize the media when inserted without it being UDF
formatted first. Yeah I could put a TV show on my laptop and watch it, but
why would I want to when I've a 250 lb. Sony wide screen TV with surround
sound. You say your using +RW's perhaps they're different, I wouldn't know
as I've never used them. The original poster will always get an error
stating unrecognizable media present when using DVD-RW media until he
formats it. After he formats it every device he intends to play that media
in has to have that UDF software installed and running in the background.
If you've figured out how to use DVD-RW in the manner you state, I'd love to
hear it. There is no industry standard UDF software and every one that
sells burning software has different specs. I've been using ATI allinwonder
MMCTV, Unlead video editor, Nero, InCD and nearly every burning and ripping
program to ever hit the web and have not figured it out. I recently
purchased a Windows Media Center Edition Laptop and I haven't gotten to know
it's in's and out's yet, but I'd bet it does not come with any UDF packet
writing software. From what I've seen so far Windows MCE is the same
clusterfusk Windows ME was when it was released in 2000. The only reason I
purchased it was you can't get any brand name laptop with a DVD RW drive
that doesn't have this crap on it. I'd rather have XP Home on it than this
junk.
If you read my post, you'll see that I said DVD-+RW. That is an
abbreviation for DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
Here's how I've used them to burn onto: I open the spindle and take a
fresh unused DVD+RW or DVD-RW off of the top of the spindle. I put it
into my DVD burner (it's an internal drive in my computer - Pioneer
DVR-108, these days). If I'm making a data disk, I choose a set of
files to burn and tell Nero to burn it as a data disk. If I'm making a
video DVD, I tell the software I'm using (nowadays it's mostly TMPEGEnc
Author) to burn to the disc in the drive. That's it...
Here's the one variation: if I've used the DVD before, the program asks
me if I want to erase it. I say yes, and about a minute later, the
erasure is complete and the burn starts.
I avoid using UDF software like the plague that I believe it to be.
I don't use my DVD set-top recorders any more, but as I recall, if you
put an unformatted disk in and they don't like it, they ask you to let
them format it. One recorder, the Philips I think (which only does
+R/+RW), took an hour to do this. The other, a LiteOn, also took an
hour on -RWs, but was relatively quick on the +RWs. Or something - it's
been a long time, so don't trust the details.
Anyway, I have no idea why it is not working for you. For me, it's just
straightforward, as I think I have said more than once, already :-)
Oh - I am in the habit of discarding the RW disks after a few uses
(let's say 10 or so) because they seem to die very young. This was also
true of CD-RWs. They don't get the number of reuses that the mfrs claim
:-(
And the OP should not format his disks in a UDF program. Erase them in
Nero Burning ROM or something equally talented.
