Re: Windows will not boot under any circumstances!

Mickey,

AVG Free allows you to create Rescue Discs, but Floppy Discs Only, which
Boot to DOS. No good for Virus Scanning files under XP. See:
http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?8,77674,77708#msg-77708
and,
http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?8,77959,77960#msg-77960

.... there should be some formal documentation of this, but I can't locate
any ATM. Sorry I mentioned AVG.

Whoops! ... I found the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition on the Grisoft
WebSite... Down the bottom of the page, right under my nose - so to
speak... :)

Mickey, How are getting along with those Bootable CD/DVDs?

Mickey,

I can't find the free version of AVG on Product page of the Grisoft
WebSite! Have they gone totally commercial?! What version do you have?
With the free version, Grisoft used to state that you can make bootable
Floppies (as I said), not CD/DVDs. See:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5480/lng/us/tpl/v5
Unfortunately, you would need to grab hold of a Floppy Drive (USB).

Otherwise, create a Memtest86 CD or BartPE DVD Disc (see:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and add your Storage/HardDisk Drivers), if
you want to see if your laptop will boot.

Mickey,

You said that Safe Mode, Last Mode, etc failed. I was just wondering
what
you meant by failed, and assumed that they also got to that XP Screen
with
the cycling progress bar then crashed. Is this the case? How far does
the
Recovery Process from the Partition get before it fails? Doesn't really
matter I s'pose.

You should try to make a Bootable CD rather than DVD. They're cheaper
and
more reliable. I don't know of any free, downloadable Virus Scanners
that
allow you to create a bootable CD. I believe AVG can create bootable
floppies if that's an option.

But I would recommend downloading the Memtest 86 ISO and burning it to
a CD.
Then try to see if it will boot. If it does let it run for an hour or
so. Go
here:http://www.memtest86.com/ ...the zip file, gzip is for Linux (?)

At least you will find out if you can boot from CD-ROM.... not sure
what you
can do after that. Maybe, you can order a Recovery DVD from Acer.

Hi Mickey,

The Recovery you tried, is that on a CD/DVD Disc or a Partition on
the
HardDisk? Does everything fail at the same point you described with
a
flash
of a Blue Screen?

You should probably try to find some other Bootable Media like a
Knoppix
DVD
(recently found stuck to the cover of Computer Mags), or a Recovery
Disc
found with some AntiVirus Software (but don't rush out and buy one
if you
haven't got one). There are others. I've used BartPE, but it really
should
be built from your own Computer, and another which I don't know much
about,
called something like UltimateBootCD. There are (free?) AntiVirus
PlugIns
for BartPE.

Scan for Viruses after booting from the external medium. And I think
I
saw
Memtest86 on Knoppix (or download the ISO and make your own Bootable
CD)
which you should also run, if possible.

If you can't get a bootable Floppy/CD/DVD to boot, send the unit
back. I
can't think of anything else you could do except perhaps have a look
for
anomolies in the BIOS.

hello,
i have run into a major predicament with my Acer Aspire 5634wlmi
laptop thats only a few months old.
Basically after leaving it on overnight to do a virus scan i
return to
it in the morning to find it's still doing it but with serious
lagg
that isn't normal. so i restart thinking it'll remove lagg and
work
fine... erm nope. it shutdown, turned back on went through normal
procedure UNTIL it got to the Windows XP Screen with the blue bar
at
the bottom. the bar cycled once, then did a 1/4 cycler, went to a
blue
screen then restarted [the blue screen was just a flash - enough
to
tell there was an error but not enough that you could read it] all
safe mode options failed, last mode failed and normal failed... i
put
the HD into a caddy to transfer files and such and put that back
in
the machine to do a recovery... guess what... recovery wouldnt
boot
-.-
so for now i'm stuck with a bricked laptop.
Anyone know whether i can fix it myself or send it in for a new
unit?

Thanks for any help in trying to fix it :]

P.S It is a MCE 2005 fyi :]

It's a partition on the HD. worked fine once but the keyboard and
mouse failed so i couldnt type in the security code so i restarted
making everything go kaput.
what do you mean by "Does everything fail at the same point you
described with a flash of a Blue Screen?" i dont quite understand
what
you mean...
I owuld make an ISO but i don't have any DVD's that i can write to.
they can get costly over here. i also made a bootable re-thingy
[sorry
cant think atm veruy tired] on my laptop not long after i got it but
i
seem to have misplaced disc one which is just typical. theres this
computer bloke i know who may be able to look at it so i'll send it
to
him n see what he says as it could be multiple things e.g. Hd failure
bad ram bad boot bad bios either way it will proabbly end up in
getting a new new unit. i'll update when i get intel.

yes that is correct they all go to the XP screen then give an error
saying that windows didn't start successfully.
upon trying to boot the recovery patition it too give me the erorr
that windows failed to start.
you mentioned that i could use AVG to make a bootable CD/DVD thingy...
i have AVG on this rig but i dont know how to make one via AVG... care
to show me how to?
many thanks :]
