Double-checking - are you saying that you tried a direct Ethernet connection
and ran into the same issue at the same point of the installation process,
or that you tried a direct connection and weren't able to get that far
because you weren't able to obtain an IP address?

Actually, it doesn't need to be a cross-over cable. The Xbox 360 has
one of those auto-sensing ethernet ports (Auto-MDI/MDIX or whatever the
'technical' term is)

Did you use a standard CAT5 cable for this? You need a "cross-over"
cable to connect directly to the PC.

Just did that. Without router, Xbox can no longer obtain IP address.
No connection, it says. (Turned off OneCare for this experiment, to
shut down firewall. Makes no difference)

It could also be the router that is not passing on certain packets
that the Xbox 360 is using to communicate with the Media Center PC.

Try connecting your computer directly to the Xbox 360. That should
help you isolate whether the router is indeed interfering (if it does
work, then it is the router, if it doesn't work then it might be
something else).

The IPv4 address in the Vista PC ends with an 11. The first IP
address in the Xbox ends with 10. Otherwise all the numbers are the
same.

This really has me stumped. I mean, I can use the Xbox's connect to
PC feature to listen to music stored on the PC. But the superduper
extender, which is supposed to be easier (??) doesn't work. If the
router was the problem, I would have thought I would not be able to
connect to the PC at all. But I can. Xbox also connects easily thru
router to the net.

Not being an expert (obviously), this leads me to believe it is a
software problem. But that's as far as my detective work goes.

You'd have to check the router's documentation to see whether it
supports multicast filtering. I'm not familiar with that particular
router.

As for the same subnet, click Start, Run and enter CMD and press
Enter. Then type in IPCONFIG and press Enter. You'll see your PC's
IP address in the list. Somewhere on the Networking blade in the
360 you'll find its IP address. The first 3 groups of numbers must
be the same, 192.168.1.xxx, 192,168.2.xxx, 192.168.0.xxx..... What
the third nuber will be depends on the DHCP server settings of your
router (unless you're using static IP addressing). But if you're
using static addressing, you'd know where to find this info.

1) Does the router support multicast filtering? If so, if its
on, turn it off. Power cycle the router and wait for it to
reboot. If its off, turn it on and power cycle the router.

2) If the 360 was previously connect to an MCE 2005 machine, Go
to the Network blade on the 360 and click on Computers. Click on
Media Center Computers then select the connection and disconnect.
Then I went back to Media Center it found the Vista MCE and came

for the Extender functionality.

Select Start -> Run "mmc"
Select File -> Add/Remove Snap-in

Select "OK" on the "Add or Remove Snap-ins" dialog
Click Console Root, Certificates, Personal, Certificates from the
directory tree on the left.
Delete Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host certificate.

4) Are the XBox and the Vista machine in the same subnet?
192.168.1.xxx or 192.168.2.xxx depending on your DHCP settings?

5) Is this an upgrade or clean install. Some users report
problems with an upgrade.

6) Click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC. Locate and right
click the Windows Media Center Extender Service and select Start.
You should also set the properties of the service to Automatic.

7) On the Networking blade of the 360, is there an alternate MAC
address? If so, clear this out.

8) Do you have the McAfee Privacy Service (may be part of a
suite) installed? If so, uninstall it.

I am afraid I keep asking questions here without success.
Having also tried MS, I am stumped.

I really would like to connect an Xbox 360 to Vista. I have
tried about two dozen times over several days. keep getting a
configuration error. In event viewer, I am told I have a
problem with Mcx2Dvcs.

Would really be grateful if someone can advise how to make
