Thanks for the update. Restoring to the factory default is a good catch all
(though unfortunately doesnothelp isolate root cause). Regardless, I'm
glad to hear you're up and running.
With respect to othervideoerrorreports, predominately the issues I see in
the Xbox forum and on TGB relate to playback of MPEG content in the presence
of a third-party firewall (or anti-virus product) vs. playback of TV
content. The former issue is understand and is something we'reworkingon
getting a knowledge base article published for, so it's TV-specific issues
that I am most interested in right now.

Todd,
I have now resolved this issue with help from Dell Computers. Here is the
solution which I must say is quite drastic:
Step 1: Run the DiskErrorChecking Utility in Microsoft®Windows
VistaT.
Automatically fix file system errors
Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
====================================================
Step 2: Reboot the system to Microsoft®WindowsVistaT Recovery
Environment (WinRE) and run Startup Repair.
====================================================
Step 3: Roll back your system to factory default settings:
====================================================
As you can imagine this total reinstallation took quite a while and it was
a
good thing I had a good back up system for my data as it obviously
involves
reformatting the HD. I would be interested to know why I had the problem
in
the first place.
Anyway, I guess you will be pleased to hear I'm off your back for now.
However, in response to your other questions. Try searching the internet
for
"VideoErrorwith Xbox 360" in particular look on this site and also
Xbox.com
and The Green Button website. All these have reports about "VideoError"
problems when trying to connect the Xbox toMediaCenterPC.

One more thing -pleasecheck the Application, System, and Security Event
Viewer logs (right click MyComputer--> Manage) for any errors
corresponding to the time that you tried to play TV; are there any?

Can you point me to these user reports? If there is an issue with as
broad an impact as you cite, I'd very much like to dig into
it/understand
it (for that matter, I want to understand it even if it's just the
two/three of you).
Given that you are seeing similar behavior, pleasealso provide the
below
information:
- Does TV playback work directly on the PC? Also, are you able to play
WMV content on your Xbox 360 from withinMediaCenter?
- Is this a clean install ofWindowsVista, an upgrade on top of
Windows
XP,
or an upgrade on top of aWindowsVista beta/RC?
- Have youinstalledanyWindowslanguage packs?
- Has this ever worked?
- What is the make/model and driver version of the network card in your
PC?
- How does your Xbox 360 connect back to your PC? (wired/wireless?)
Pleaseprovide information regarding the topology of your home network
and
make/model/firmware version for your home router

I have this same problem, and agree based on my research, there is
hundreds
of other Vista/XBox360 users with the same problem. MS needs to
address
this, espically with the noise about their competitors productworking
so
well.

Since posting this question I have noticed that there are numerous
Vista
users with the same or a very similar problem. Some of them were
previously
successfully running their Xbox as an Extender with MC running on a
Windows
XP PC. Now thevideofilesthat they were playing won't run from the
PC
running under Vista. It seems pretty obvious to me that the issue is
probably
within Vista. Unfortunately, nobody at MS seems to have noticed this
and
continue to muddle along trying to put the blame on 3rd party
software &
hardware.

I'm currently having the "Video Error" problem on my Xbox 360 but my
situation is different from most others. I have multiple Media Center
PCs (one Vista Ultimate install, one Vista Home Premium install, and
one Media Center 2005 install) in my home and I'm trying to share
Recorded TV among the three. I know this isn't something that's
supported by Microsoft but there are plenty of fixes posted on
thegreenbutton.com and many people have this working perfectly with a
similar setup to mine.
My issue is that when I'm trying to watch Recorded TV on my 360, I
can't watch videos from one of the machines and I get the dreaded
"Video Error." I currently have my 360 hooked up to the Vista Premium
machine and I can't watch videos from the machine with Vista Ultimate
on it but I can watch video from the machine that has MCE 2005 on it.
I also tried hooking my 360 into my Vista Ultimate machine and then I
couldn't watch videos from my Vista Premium machine but I could still
watch them from the MCE 2005 machine. I've made sure that the
permissions are all correct and rebooted several times with no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
