Re: unable to obtain 16x9 on digital channels

Resolved: I called the cable company to make sure my cable boxes were set up
properly (Pace HD boxes). Because the set up menu is on the video screen, I
routed the signal via composite (yellow RCA) from the cable box to the 16x9
Sony television (bypassing the media center PC because I did not think I
could get the menus on the screen). The cable company guy talked me throught
the set up. I did this on both STB's. I then ran the cable signal from the
STB to the TV tuner card in the PC via S-video. I used DVI from the PC video
card to the TV. Same problem ... some 16x9, some 4x3 (would not go to wide
screen).
[aside- from what I could tell by reading my STB manual, the STB signal
was 480i regardless going out on S-video to a non HD tuner. Note, the
Hauppauge 150 card's best input is S-video; no component, no DVI).
I then cleared the Hauppauge drivers/inf's and ran the 'hardware found'
programs on the media PC using the drivers downloaded from the Hauppauge
site. Did this twice... no solution. I then ran it again with a Hauppauge
CD I'd rec'd when I bought one of the cards (Driver Installation CD for
Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2.9) in the drive and, for some
unknown reason, after running the set up on MCE, I was able to get all
channels in wide screen.

The bottom line is that I was able to achieve the desired result; don't
really understand how/why it happened.

thanks for the input/responses received.

Since all of the input you are getting from the STBs is 4:3 aspect ratio SD
480i video your STB may have a setting to tell it if your display(the
hauppauge card) is a 4:3 aspect ratio display(which it is) or a 16:9 aspect
ratio display. The STB uses this setting to decide if 16:9 HD channels are
to be displayed in letterbox mode over its S-Video output.
The other settings effecting your output are of course you display card
settings for the type of monitor you have and for the resolution you are
sending to it over what ever display interface you are using.

I am using digital tuners (Pace DC550P if it matters) connected via
S-video.
Do you think I may need to change some settings on the STB? I have
thought
about switching the STB hookups to the tuners to see what difference that
may
make (the problems I have noted have been on the 'older' 150 card). I
have
some literature on the STB and can check that and try to change some
settings. Appreciate your timely responses.. before reloading drivers I
will try other options.

It sounds like you are using digital cable boxs to feed the Hauppauge
tuners with S-Video or RF output.
Since your cable box downscales any "HD" channels to NTSC 4:3 SD 480i
resolution prior to output over S-video or RF I an not sure why you think
the problem you are having is with your NTSC tuner cards. Do you have
the
cable box set indicate that your "display" (the 150 cards) are 4:3 aspect
ratio devices.

Please correct any misconceptions I might have in the above about your
configuration.

Your problem may also be being caused by the settings for you graphics
card
or for your decoder software

Update: 3 channels in the standard package (50, 66 and 69) do not come
up
full screen (16x6); all of the digital channels do. My hidef channels
are
in
the 700 range. Of the high def channels, only 5 of the 8 are 16x9.
Again,
the 'i' control cannot not address this. I am going to try to remove
and
rerun the Hauppauge card set up. thanks for the response.

All digital channels are not 16:9 most are SD 4:3 480i.
All "HD" 16:9 channels are however digital.

I have a media PC I built with two 150 tuners. It was working fine.
Had
to
replace the motherboard and video card. When I reloaded the
software,
I
now
get full screen on my channels 1-75; but on the digital channels
(100+)
it
is
not full screen. Even when I use the "i" button (more), I am unable
to
get
the picture to fille the screen. Any suggestions ... I believe I
reloaded
all programs with their updated drivers. Anyone had this problem
before?
Thanks,
