Re: XP MCE 2005 - cable to satellite.

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Thank you jolt for that link. I cracked my case and it looks like I already
have that little thing. It must have come with my card originally (It's been
over a year so I didn't remember. If it happened more than a day ago it
tends to leave my mind). This opens up a new question in the cable to
stallite conversion:

Do satellite boxes have the standard A/V (Yellow/Red/White) outputs (which
cable does NOT have). I read somewhere that one must use the same Interface
on all video cards meaning you can't use coax for one card and A/V for the
other one. So, as long as I can use the standard A/V ports from both of the
satellite receivers I should be fine.

I think this might actually work. I am getting exited. We have been without
decent TV for about 4 months now. We've still been getting "The Office" (a
must) via an antenna plugged into the MCE but the picture don't look so
great.

Now I just need to get a blaster thingy and I think I can get satellite up
and running. Oh, one more question. Does it matter if the satellite feed is
digital since my card is analog? Thanks.

This is the card I have:

HAUPPAUGE WinTV-PVR-500MCE Personal Video Recorder.

Anyone know if they have a kit that can add the additional inputs? That
would be great if they do.

I will look into the blaster with remote. Thanks for your help.

The remote can be found at newegg.com and others, it usually sells for
$30-$40 for the remote, receiver, and two blasters.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16880100851 I got
mine for $28 a while back, but it is the Phillips OEM one, not the
"genuine" MS one, check ebay, etc.

What card do you have? The maker of it may sell a kit available for your
card that will add the additional inputs?

Ok, my MCE didn't come with any IR blasters (or even a remote). Is that
something I can purchase off the shelf somewhere. Anything specific I
should be looking for? Even though I have a dual tuner card, it only
has one input so I guess I'll have to get another one. Thanks for your
help. I kind of have an idea of the direction I need to go.

Forgive me for a possibly stupid question. I had Comcast cable
running into my MCE 2005 box working just great. Then we moved into a
new development and cable wasn't available right away. We waited for
it to be setup and now find out that they decided not to do it. So,
we are looking at satellite. My question is how it interfaces with
MCE. With cable, it was no big deal, no set top box or anything just
plug in the cable and it recorded what we told it to and we could
watch two different channels in two different rooms (dual tuner
card). But, I have some questions on satellite.

1. Doesn't sattelite require a set top box? If so, how do I get the
MCE to change channels through the set top box receiver?

Yes, you will need a set top box (STB), to control it, you will have
to use the IR Blasters that should have in the kit with your remote
and receiver kit. They plug into the back of the receiver and then are
affixed to the front of the STB, that way when you tell (or have a
recording set up) MCE to change channels, MCE send the IR command out
through the Blasters to change the channel on the STB.

2. Mutiple channels. I would still want to be able to record or watch
two channels simultaneously. Is this possible with satellite?

Yes, but you will have to have two STB's, as it can only decode on
channel at a time. Unless the sat. companies have some kind of dual
tuner box (I've never used sat, so I'm a little unfamiliar). Depending
on the tuner card, you may also need an extra set of connectors (it
would plug into the card and use another slot on the back of the PC)
if the card does not have dual inputs on the back

I know the satellite providers offer a "Tivo" but I really want to
stick with MCE as I have two Xbox 360s used as extenders in two
different rooms. Thanks in advance for your help.
