Re: System Restarting with NO error messages

Hi Steve,

Gene E. Bloch is correct. This is weird! It appears that you do not have a
regular fatal sytem error, i. e. Blue-Screen-of-Death scenario. Regardless
of the type of Fault, your Computer _should_ Restart with with an Improper
Shutdown prompt, but it doesn't. Your computer is not trapping or retaining
the Error. Hmmm...
I have no idea... it seems like a hardware problem.

Try testing your RAM with the utility on the Vista Installation Disc (if you
have one.) Or, if available for your system (x64 or x86?), download the
MemTest86+ ISO file, burn it to a CD. Boot with it and do a few passes...
one hour should find any errors.

Gene,

1st let me start out by saying thank you for the responses. If my post
came
across rude, i do apologize.

I'm willing to use any error detection methodology that can resolve this
for
my customer.

I have turned off (unchecked) the automatically reboot feature. (it still
resets)
I have checked all of the event logs and nothing.

I just tried to run a DVD just using the player that we installed and it
was
over half way through the movie (American Pie) when i left to go do some
pickups and deliveries, when i cam back it was at the user login prompt.
(i.e
it had reset)

again no errors or message i can locate.

thanx again for the help,
Steve

I don't know what you mean. Do you mean that the fact that the error
only occurs under Media Center means that you shouldn't use normal
error detection techniques?

My first bit of advice was valid for "System just reboots" kinds of
errors, regardless of when the error occurs. It is also the normal way
to deal with (I quote you) "NO error message displayed" on rebooting.
The facts that you had already tried that method (which you hadn't
said) and that it failed indicate that the error is deeper than
expected, for some value of "deeper".

The second item might have been redundant, as I read your first post,
but I wasn't sure... And it is not bad advice, regardless of when the
error occurs.

On 3/07/2007, Steve posted this:
as noted above: Please note that the system WILL RUN flawlessly until
i
click on the MEDIA CENTER icon and run a program under that.

I can have ANY program running as long as it is not under the "Media
Center"
extensions (the little green icon)

as an example, if i open the Media Center and do "pictures" then "slide
show" it will fail between 15 and 20 minutes out.

If I JUST open the media center and do nothing it will stay running
fine.

I have already turned off the "automatically restart" and it still
resets
itself with NO error messages or system/application/security log
entries

I have checked ALL of the event logs. NOTHING.

Help?

Ok, this one is wierd. Media Center 2005 loads fine, runds for days
as
long as we do not start the "media center". Once we do, ANY program
(even
view slideshow) will run for between 10-20 minutes then the system
just
reboots.

NO error message displayed.
NO "recovered from serious error" after reboot
NO event logs

OK... help?

This might help:

Right click My computer & click Properties. Choose the Advanced tab
and
click the Settings button in the Startup & Recovery panel.

Uncheck "Automatically restart" in the System failure panel.

OK your way out and now you might get a chance to see what's
happening.

In any case, there are also error logs you can see even now. Again, My
computer, but this time choose Manage. Go to System Tools | Event
viewer and look at the System log (I think!).
