Re: Can't Open in Safe Mode

I tried the "last working configuration" - no go either. The last driver
listed on the screen when trying to go safe mode is mup.sys.............how
would I get a replacement?? Any one know?

What about other F8 options such as the one about the last working
configuration or some name like that.
I also assume when you are trying safe mode you are not trying safe mode
with networking.

There is a site relating to shutdown problems. It is run by a person I
think is a Microsoft MVP who works on other NGs than this one.

It might be www.aumha.com - Wait a minute, I'll go see if I have a
shortcut.

I do have one: http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnme.htm

This is for Windows Me, however... Still, it might be worth a look, and he
might have other hints about XP.

Yes, I can boot fine in normal mode. Safe mode is the problem. I should
also say that I have been unable to process a normal shutdown of Windows.
It gets to the message "Windows is Shutting Down" and goes no further-I
have to turn off power to shut it off.

I have been unable to open Windows MCE in safe mode. When the computer
is booting, I take the F8 key option to get to the screen with several
boot options, choose safe mode and wait......and wait......and wait. I
get a black and white screen with a listing of drivers but nothing else
from there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Bill

If the list of drivers is not continuing to scroll, then your problem is
with the last one listed on the screen.

Now you didn't say if you can boot to normal mode. Obviously, I would
guess not, but your phrasing leaves me confused. If you can, then on
booting, uninstall the offending driver.

Otherwise, you need to boot from the Windows disk in repair mode, which
I don't recall much about...
