The illusive CMPNENTS directory, is definitely not on mine, and I can show
you a thousand webpages of people searching for it. It contains Tablet
files
as well as Media Center files, and it seems that Tablet users are in the
same
boat as Media Center users... no Operating System discs!. Your bro was
lucky... what model HP was it?

To the OP, soapking, you have a space between "author" and "script.dll".
Is
this correct? And have you searched your hard-drive for it? Can you
specify a
path to the file when you are prompted for the installation of the missing
dll? ... I can't remember

Check within the directory (i386) and see if there is a folder called
CMPNENTS
Within it should be a path similar to \MEDIACTR\I386

The content inside that directory should be the contents of disc two.

Hi Gary,

This has been a sore point with me since I purchased my MCE laptop. I
didn't
know much about computers beforehand, but I knew I had an important
Windows
95 disc with a shiny certificate that I could rely on.

Now, all I have a is crappy two-year old recovery disc with a crappy
Toshiba/Norton Ghost image full of outdated junk. This image does not
put
the
contents of disc 2 onto the hard-drive, and I haven't heard that HPs do
either. We get disc 1 (XP Pro only) in the i386 folder.

This "recovery disc" exploitation of consumers means that there is no
option
to run the recovery console, no option to run an OS repair, no option
to
slipstream service packs or Microsoft updates. Each time there is a
problem
that might be easily resolved by having proper Installation Discs.....
forget
it! The only option is to do a recovery and spend the next three days
downloading updates (more than 80 from WU and still counting util the
next
service pack, which I doubt will ever arrive), uninstalling the junk,
reinstalling, reconfiguring, etc... just waiting for the next disaster.

To make matters worse, Microsoft Tech Support look at you sideways -
down
the phoneline :) and treat you with suspicion when you tell them you
don't
have proper OS discs and can't access the normal repair options. "Go to
the
Manufacturer", they say. And, of course, the Manufacturer says, "Go to
Microsoft!"

If you buy just the software as an OEM version, it comes with a disc
2.
If you bought your computer pre-built, they might have a folder with
the
contents of disc 2 on your drive (the HP that I use to have had this).

Hi Jason,

Have you ever tried, as a humble consumer, to get disc 2 of the
Media
Center
2005 install set?

The cheapest solution would be to get disc 2 of the Media Center
2005
install set.

If you don't have media center install discs, see if your
computer
manufacturer left the contents of install discs on the hard
drive.

I entered the CD and DVD in the CD Rom drive. It does not
read
either. I
erroneously unclicked the Sonic CD and DVD Burning in the
ADD/REMOVE
WINDOWS
COMPONENETS. When I clicked the checkmark to attempt to
reinstall
it,
I
get
the following message: THE FILE 'Author Script.dll' ON
WINDOWS
XP
PROFESSIONAL CD 2 IS NEEDED.
How do I resolve? Do I need to purchase Windows XP Pro to
reinstall
the
drive?

If I upgraded to Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista, will this
also
solve
this
problem?

Wouldn't you prefer the simpler & cheaper solution?
