Depending on how you connect to the LCD and what settings are available, you
might have some settings you can adjust in the LCD itself. Every brand is
liable to be somewhat different of course. I found that most settings are
available if the monitor is connected via VGA. Using the DVI connection
eliminated a lot of those options. Enabling sRGB color matching (correct for
computer use) disabled most of the remaining output color and brightness
level adjustments on the monitor. That just leaves the adjustments in the
video adapter settings.
ATI has separate Video levels adjustments that don't affect the normal
desktop, Nvidia might have something similar.

The adjustments you are looking at are hardware adjustments specific to
your monitor/TV set. A Media-Center Remote Control won't be able to
adjust these. You need to use your TV Set's Remote Control or the
software related to your monitor/video adaptor.
Thanks, now I get it!
I have a yummy Eizo 24" LCD monitor and a Nvidia 7600 GT based graphics
card. I'm using the monitor for both Windows desktop work and watching
TV/DVD. So I would need to change the settings in my graphics card for the
two situations. It's a bit of a drag because the current Nvidia
drivers/tools for Vista don't allow storing profiles. But in principle, is
that the way to go? (The monitor has a value named "brightness" as well,
but that changes the backlight intensity, not the black level.)
