Re: Upgrade path to Vista not possible from MCE2002

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I've been using it a few months but haven't yet done anything terribly
complicated. Only real problem I have is the old familiar menu items are
often harder to find, and Outlook is slower. Other than that I like the
changes.

Must take a LONG time. I used it in beta for months. Despised it.

Whose bright idea was it to eliminate menus? I

You may find Office 2007 a bit frustrating at first, but it really does
work better and more intuitively <g>.

Thanks for the tip Tom,
I ran the advisor from Safe Mode, and it identified Mcaffee as the main
culprit. I had disabled it, but requred a complete uninstall to proceed.
Finally got it all installed, although Outlook 2000 kept crashing, but
thats
another story. Eventually had to install Office 2007 and all is well.
Thanks again

I suspect it is choking on a device driver. Have you tried the install
from
XP Safe mode?

Thanks Tom,
You're right, Media Centre 2005, although Computer Properties reports
2002.
However, in any case, Vista setup causes a reboot when it first scans
the
system during install, and Upgrade advisor stops responding when I
run it.
I
rang microsoft support assuming the 2002 version and the only advise
was
as
above, due to MC 2002 having "the network bound to the OS"?
Given that its 2005, any ideas on how to deal with the Advisor
failure? At
least if that runs I might determine the device driver or
hardware/software
causing the problem.

I have xp media centre 2002.
According to the upgrade path matrix at :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx
the premium home edition of vista should be the upgrade option,
however
after checking the site and forking out the cash, and the setup
failing
repeatedly, Microsoft phone support tells me I must do a clean
install
with
the 2002 version of MC.
I really want to avoid reinstalling the 150 plus applications and
software
on my machine ( an aspire e650 XPMCE Pentium D 2*2.8Ghz 2GB Ram)

Is there any alternative approach other than the backup and
reformat
option??

First, are you sure you have MCE2002? I find that highly unlikely
given
the
specifications of your machine.

Go into About in MCE (not in XP) and check again. You likely have
MCE2005.
