Hi K
This question is not really related to Media Center and should be asked in an XP Forum, however it depends on whether you are a member of a Domain or a Workgroup. In any case Right click my Computer and select Properties and select Computer Name Tab. Select Change Button and change name. This will require computer reboot. If you are a Domain member you will be asked for the name and password of the user with authority to make this change. If you have any shares this will affect the share names and any members of your Workgroup or Domain who have drives mapped to your shares.

As often as I turn to forums for help, you would think I would be smart
enough to not be so stupid. Here a while back I asked in this forum, I think
it was this forum, about changing the name of this computer. Someone was kind
enough to offer help and I wasn't smart enough to print or save it. When this
computer was new it was named for the person it was paired to. That person
has since left the company, under some very ungracious circumstances. Now all
files sent to our customers, vendors, etc still carry that persons name in
the file name. All of our contacts are aware of the situ and it is a constant
irritation for us to keep rubbing the wound simply because XP requires every
computer to be named. Hopefully we have learned the bitter lesson that even
our (3rd party) techs didn't know - don't name computers after people! Last
time I posted this question, someone was kind enough to provide me a link to
a process for making the change. What I remember most was getting lost in the
process as I read it and getting irritated that I was probably going to have
to call in a tech and pay to have all our computers changed to benign names.
Since then I have decided to revisit the process and started searching for my
post on this subject. I never found my post but I found many others that were
quite similar. Apparently I'm not alone in this situ. Several corrective
measures were offered in the many postings, I even tried some that I
considered within my capabilities, all to no avail. I'm not brave enough to
try the ones that describe adjusting the registry. If anyone knows of
instructions for changing the name of a computer and all the associated file
names, and the instructions are written elementery enough that even us
computerly challenged can follow them, I would greatly appreciate a link. I'm
sure requiring a computer to be named is a good thing or it wouldn't be so,
but after reviewing such a long list of postings asking for help on this
subject, and because the fix is not simple, it's easy to question the logic.
All ideas, suggestions, and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.
