Yeah, Ultimate is too pricey, but I hear you can get OEM versions of most of
these for much less than retail price. Since Media Center users are used to
OEM products, that's not a major issue...

You might be a good candidate for Vista for several reasons. First off,
Vista comes with a DVD codec, so you don't have to go buy one. The Media
Center portion of Vista overcomes some issues with 2005, such as the
ability to login to a domain. Overall the OS seems smoother, less
succeptible to momentary hangs that XP has. Vista's version of MovieMaker
can finally edit DVR-MS files, and DVD burning is built into the OS.
And using an xBox 360 as an Extender has given it a very high Wife
Acceptance Factor...
The only real drawback is the hardware - you'll want at least a 1Ghz CPU
and 128Mb graphics card (fairly recent) and 1Gb of RAM at a minimum, and
of course faster/more = better.

I did pay for the computer a year ago and I got bundled software
included in
the total cost (not free).. some of which consumes my time with its
omissions
and commisions.
My computer came with a lot of average software .. I dont want more.
Windows Media Center was included .. its from Microsoft ... I give it
some
slack ... I hope I am justified .. I do like it once I am viewing.
If I can get decent software for free I do have a preference for it.
In general I am disappointed with video and dvd software bundled with my
computer.
I often wonder what does the average person do when problems arise. I
understand why some people claim they (politely) despise their computer
and
want to turn it into pot hole filler.
Something tells me if I upgrade some of the same disappointments I would
be
only marginally more satisfied at best. Some bundled programs do video
capture/view at small size .. or Full Screen Only .. When many times I
want
Window with size I can change. My computer has Suprise Software. Poorly
documented in content and style. Lack of useful progress indicator or
logs.
DVD Creation related GUIs with which I dont agree, that make me guess,
or
attempt to nickel and dime me, Many have ambigous, lack of knowledge,
evasive, blame-fixing finger pointing ,(not problem-fixing), smoke
screen,
tech support. Plus daily marketing blurbs to my email once I register.
On the other hand I am typically satisfied to use a version of MS-Office
from a previous year (not 2007). I am more than satisfied with some
famous
graphic and bitmap software.
I dont want more average, time-gobbling software.

that MCE can't handle composite video AND rf on a different tuner.

mya question is 2 parts, one is that correct and two, did they get

If you're asking about being able to switch between watching TV and
an
external
composite input easily, no they haven't fixed it. You still have
to run
setup and switch
the input to composite then switch it back again to watch TV.
