My Sony Vaio computer's hard drive crashed and I will attempt to install a new one

My Sony computer is a PCV-RZ40(G/Y series. I heard a grinding noise and
I think the Hard drive needs to be replaced. Since the computer is 4
years old I cannot afford to have it repaired. I called Sony and they
will sell me a 250G drive for about $250, an amount which I am willing
to pay. I first tried reinstalling the emergency backup discs but got a
message saying no hard drive could be found. I opened the computer case
and found the hard drive and disconnected the wide ribbon connector.
When I tried to disconnect the second smaller cable from the hard drive
it seems to be stuck when it got about 1/4 out of the socket. Does
anyone know if I am attempting to do something that is difficult or
impossible for a novice to do? I do not want to order the hard drive
from Sony unless I am reasonably sure that I can succeed. Any ideas or
help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
