If you haven't got the Video DVD option, you need to google for
Sonicencoders.MSI and install it.

Persnoally, I'd download the trial of Nero 7 and use that, and
if you
find
it helps you do what you want to do, I'd buy it.

A DVD-RW has to be formatted just as you would a floppy or hard
drive. The process is called UDF formatting and there are several
different types. For instance Nero uses a program called InCD to
UDF format a RW disk and to view that disk on another computer it
to has to have InCD installed. If you take that disk and try to
view it on a system that has Roxio Adaptec UDF software on it or
no UDF packet writing software at all, the disk will appear blank.
Read Write DVD's are a storage media you can use much like a hard
drive, with it you can erase, drag and drop, overwrite existing
files, re-format etc.
For media playback you should use + or - R DVD's not + or - RW
DVD's.

No, that's only true if you're trying to use a DVD-+RW like a (very
large) floppy or another hard drive, e.g., for drag and drop file
copying (or other Windows Explorer type file copying operations) on
the fly.

For making "regular" DVDs, either data or videos, i.e., for burning,
you just put them into the drive and burn them exactly like a DVD-
+R.

There is one exception: if the RW disc has been used before. Then it
has to be erased before being burned as a DVD.

I burn DVD RWs as above occasionally without any problems, so I know
it should work.

Which means I have no idea what's causing the OP's problem.

Then how do you erase it without it being UDF formatted in the first place?
Then how do you play it on any other system or standalone DVD player that
won't read that particular type of UDF formatting.
Not to mention you can purchase 100 Verbatim DVD-R Disks on sale for around
thirty dollars and Verbatim DVD-RW disks are over a dollar each. I've been
using DVD-R and -RW disk many years and I've never figured out how to get
any system to recognize the media when inserted without it being UDF
formatted first. Yeah I could put a TV show on my laptop and watch it, but
why would I want to when I've a 250 lb. Sony wide screen TV with surround
sound. You say your using +RW's perhaps they're different, I wouldn't know
as I've never used them. The original poster will always get an error
stating unrecognizable media present when using DVD-RW media until he
formats it. After he formats it every device he intends to play that media
in has to have that UDF software installed and running in the background.
If you've figured out how to use DVD-RW in the manner you state, I'd love to
hear it. There is no industry standard UDF software and every one that
sells burning software has different specs. I've been using ATI allinwonder
MMCTV, Unlead video editor, Nero, InCD and nearly every burning and ripping
program to ever hit the web and have not figured it out. I recently
purchased a Windows Media Center Edition Laptop and I haven't gotten to know
it's in's and out's yet, but I'd bet it does not come with any UDF packet
writing software. From what I've seen so far Windows MCE is the same
clusterfusk Windows ME was when it was released in 2000. The only reason I
purchased it was you can't get any brand name laptop with a DVD RW drive
that doesn't have this crap on it. I'd rather have XP Home on it than this
junk.
