Re: Xbox 360 Extender install fails

I may have spoken too soon. I noticed an icon for Extender Resources in the
system tray. I rebooted and tried the process again. This time it didn't
install software, it asked for the code and connected!!! It is currently
adding music (1200+ CD's - could take a while) but I am able to watch TV
programs I record on my PC via the Xbox. Unless someone thinks there may
still be a problem lurking in the background I think everything is working.

I want to thank you for the help. Thank you all very much.

Progress – at least the symptoms have changed.
I changed the ident key to 4.0 and rebooted. Got the Xbox ready and went to
install the software on the PC. I double-clicked on the icon in the system
tray, which brought up the web site. Started the installation and it didn’t
complain about the version number! Instead, it got “An unhandled exception”
stating that ehiProxy or one of its dependents was missing. I clicked
continue and it proceeds to a new window where I have to accept the license.
After that it says it is “Updating Windows XP Media Center 2005”. Then it
goes to “Installing Windows Media Center Extender Software” but it never
completes and I have to cancel it from the first window. Still don’t get to
the point where I can put in the code. Jason Tsang is almost certainly
correct about my reinstalling SP2 but it’s been so long ago I don’t remember
the circumstances. So, how do I correct the problem of the missing ehiProxy?

Yep - if you change the ident value back to 4.0, the software should install
fine.

Sounds like you installed SP2 over MCE2005 (which would give you that
ident version).

Fix the ident number to reflect the version of media center that you have.

The key at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center\Ident has a value of 2.8. Note: not "Ident key" if that makes a
difference.

Please open regedit and check the value of the ident reg key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media

I don't have that option in my menu structure. I have start/all
programs/accessories/Media Center which has Media Center and a /Media
Center
Progams directory but Media Center Extender Manager isn't listed in
either
place. Do you know if that is a utility I can download? Is it
supplied by
an
OEM? I ask because I built this PC over a year ago.

Hi DaBeat:
Just checking.......did you try to connect to the xbox360 using
the
"Media Center Extender Manager" in the start menu or did you try
connecting
using the outdated instructions on the xbox360? You might try
clicking
start/all programs/accessories/Media Center/Media Center Extender
Manager
and
click "File" then select "add new xbox360 if that's not the method
you
used.

No
Joy.

I wish I knew how the extender install routine was determining the
OS
version(most likely a key).

Hi again DaBeat:
I'm sorry to hear that didn't solve your problem. Sometimes
when
you go
to update it updates your software with something that needs
updating! LOL
I have
Windows Rights Management Client Backwards Compatibility SP2 and
also
Windows Rights Management Client with Service Pack 2 showing in
my
add/remove
programs screen. Do you show both those updates? If not, try
going
back to
windows update and see if it wants to update your update! Also,
did
you
look over on the far left side of the update window and see if
there
were any
"optional software updates"? I have downloaded some media center
updates
from there. I think it's more likely you're missing an update
than
having a
corrupted update. Be sure to re-start you computer before going
into
the
Media Center software to check the current version. Good luck!

Hi DaBeat:
I'm not sure if you have all the updates to MCE2005. My
Media
Center
software version reads 5.1.2715. 3011. Maybe you should go
to
"Windows
Update" and see if there are additional updates you may need.
Select
"custom" updates and check to see if there are "optional"
software updates in
addition to the priority updates.

the icon

It never asks

Any ideas
