I can try to get that done over the long weekend. But while mentioning the
wireless router between the Xbox and the PC, I probably should have specified
that I am still connecting to the router with an ethernet cable, and *not*
wirelessly (the wireless part is for our laptops). Does that change anything,
or would you still like me to try the direct connection bypassing the router?

Not seeing the code screen is definitely a plus. To be sure, I wasn't
complaining about that :-), just wondering if it had anything to do with some
MCE/Windows update that got rid of that problem, but started the new DRM
problem.

I can't think of a logical correlation between the change in behavior of the
8-digit code screen and the current issue (the 8-digit screen appearing is
indicative of a slow network/PC, so I'd expect that you no longer seeing it
would be a good thing...).

Thanks for you response. I have a Linksys Wireless-G router between the
Xbox
and the PC. Unfortunately, I can't try connecting my Xbox directly to my
PC,
since they are on different floors. I will have to move mountains to get
that
done (figuratively, of course). When this problem happens, and I turn on
the
System Resource Monitor, everything seems to be in the green, so that may
not
be an issue.

One thing I did notice is that each time this happens, a Windows update is
downloaded and is pending to be installed. But I can't imagine that making
a
difference since the update doesn't install unless I manually allow it
to --
it's only downloaded.

Another thing to note is that as long as I was NOT having this problem, I
would frequently get the initial MCX screen on my TV giving me the new
serial
number asking me to note it down and put the same number on PC (the same
message one gets during setup). However, that would go away by itself (as
pointed out by my kids) within a few seconds and the Xbox would connect to
the MCE normally.

Now, for the past few months, I have NEVER seen that prompt, which
coincides
with the time I started having problems with my DRM songs. All very weird,
and yet, too much of a coincidence not to be connected.

Do you have a cross-over Ethernet cable handy? If so, try directly
connecting your PC to your Xbox (bypassing your router) to see if that
resolves the issue. If it does, this suggests that your
switch/router/hub
is doing something wacky. On a related note - what network hardware is
there between your Xbox and PC? (make/model of routers, switches, hubs,
wireless gear, etc.)

Hi All,

I have this weird problem (that started happening recently) where I
can't
seem to play any purchased songs on my Xbox MCX. I have a regular Xbox
MCX
(not 360) .

The error I get is something to the effect that the "... Media Center
was
unable to validate the identity of the extender and therefore can't
play
protected content...". This used to happen a lot with content recorded
from
premium channels such as Showtime, Cinemax, etc., but almost never
happened
with the songs (I'll explain in a minute under what circumstances it
did
happen). However, the TV problem seems to have been replaced by the
music
problem.

My only remedy right now is to restart my MCE PC, which is a real pain
in
the neck (since I have to go to a different floor to do it). Most of
the
protected songs have been purchased from MSN Music. Another thing to
note
here is that everytime I had this problem with songs previously, it was
probably because I had purchased the song from a different PC, stored
it
on
my main MCE PC, and never really tried playing it from there (so MSN
Music
could not validate the license on it). However, after I played it from
there,
it acquired the license, and played it without a problem on the MCE PC,
as
well as on the MCX.

However, now, even if it plays on the MCE PC, it won't play on the MCX
unless I reboot the PC. And the most frustrating thing is that,
sometimes,
even THAT don't work!

Does anyone know why this could be happening? Any ideas would be
appreciated.
