First off Clement - STOP SHOUTING!
2nd, this is a Media Center forum geared toward problems and quirks of that
system, is this a Media Center PC?
If not, we still might be able to help, I think we need some clarification.
What is currently on the new system you got from the friend, does it have XP
now and it won't let you download updates or are you trying to use the same
key to update a 2nd computer?
If you are trying to do the latter and you bought a retail copy of XP and
the old system is trashed, then I believe you can "transfer" the lic to the
second PC. If the old PC is still being used or if the old PC had an OEM
copy of XP, you may not reuse the lic.

I PURCHASED A GENUINE COPY OF WINDOWS XP WITH A PRODUCT KEY LAST YEAR TO
CONVERT AN OLD ONE. MY OLD COMPUTER GOT DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIRS, TOGETHER
WITH
THE INSTALLATION CD OF GENUINE COPY. A NEW ONE I HAVE GOT RECENTLY FROM A
FRIEND NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED THROUGH VALIDATION FROM MICROSOFT. CAN'T I
USE
MY GENUINE COPY PRODUCT KEY TO UPGRADE THE NEW PC?
HOW CAN I UPGRADE THE NEW ONE FROM THE FRIEND.
