Why can't I search in this forum? I created a post and it brought me to a
log in screen and from there i was able to search the forum, but not from
this main view, what gives?

That's because this isn't a forum, its a newsgroup. Microsoft is just trying
to provide its own interface between you and the data.

To search a newsgroup you'll need to use Google groups.
