Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

What is the purpose of running w2k3 as a VM and is it really necessary for
the services / daemons you expect to be running? I have not seen many
reasons to run one outside of a corporate or data center environment.

You may want to aim higher than S-Video out depending on your AV equipement,
DVI-DVI/DVI-HDMI gives excellent results that can almost be called mind
blowing. I have the X1600 PRO and it ships with a HD component out adapter
so I assume that the X1300 does as well and that will give you another
superior option than s-video. ATI also sells a dvi-component out adapter as
well.

Something else you may want to look into in regards to the heat / noise
factors is the case and PSU that you choose for your HTPC. This may seem odd
but I have found that audible noise levels from the exact same equipent in
different casses can vary greatly. Also mounting any chassi fans and HDDs
with rubber / vibration reducing fasteners can also make a difference.

Also your system configuration may impact the noise / heat issues such as
powering down unused drives etc. In a server environment you would try to
have the pagefile and server objects reside on different drive / controllers
to maximise data thoroughput. In an HTPC I would look at having the primary
drive partitioned lets say three ways. A system partition with pagefile,
whatever daemons and services residing on a second partition, MCE recorded
tv residing on a third. Additional drives would hold media and other less
often used data so that the less used drives can power down when not in use.

I'm planning to build a machine to run MCE2005.
I also want it to run a server (W2K3) or two in virtual machines (VMWARE)
so
it will need to be fairly stable.
Gaming is not needed, but TV out is important, although HDMI is not (yet).
Low energy/heat/fan noise is important as this will be a living room
machine.

Current planned spec is
Mobo - ASUS P5B-VM
Core2Duo 2.13Ghz - Arctic Freezer Pro 7 Heatpipe CPU cooler.
4Gb RAM DDR II
Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500 Dual Tuner MCE Kit
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1300 Hyper Memory 512MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI
(PCI-Express)
Big disks, DVDRW etc

MCE has a reputation for being a bit picky with the display cards it will
work with. The Sapphire above looks good at the moment because it is
passively cooled and does the main job of making S-Video output available
which will be it's main job in the near future.

I'm had no experience of MCE so please feel free to tell me (before I
spend
lots of cash) if this is a mad plan, or feasable. My biggest worry is the
compatiblity of MCE with this graphics card - any advice gratefully
received.
Happy New Year.

Dave
